Well over $100,000 in legal bills to get the truth

After nearly two years of legal battling — and some very large legal bills — The Intercept just got a favorable ruling that brings us closer than ever to getting the truth about the brutal crackdown on protests against the Dakota Access pipeline led by the Standing Rock Sioux.
The North Dakota Supreme Court just unanimously ruled that 60,000 pages of documents about pipeline company Energy Transfer and its private security firm, TigerSwan, are subject to the state’s open records laws.
But Energy Transfer won’t admit defeat.
With nearly unlimited resources, the oil giant is committed to exhausting every possible appeal. It’s continuing to expend enormous legal efforts to prevent the release of these records — and driving up our costs well into the six figures.

Abortion rights in Canada
- Details

Hi PAOV,
Last week, a leaked draft decision revealed that the United States Supreme Court plans to overturn Roe v. Wade, a landmark abortion rights case. If the case is overturned, hundreds of thousands of people across the United States will lose access to safe abortion care.
Abortion was decriminalized in Canada over thirty years ago. Unfortunately, for thousands of Canadians, decriminalization doesn’t guarantee access to an abortion. Add your name to demand better access to abortion.
Access to an abortion in Canada is not a constitutionally protected right. Some provinces heavily restrict where abortions can be performed, forcing thousands of pregnant...

Yesterday, Canadians learned that they are now on the hook for over $21B on TMX thanks to a $10B loan guarantee by the Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland.
We need a formal review of the Trans Mountain pipeline now.
A,
Yesterday, we found out the Trudeau government is reneging on its campaign promise to stop subsidies to fossil fuels and take climate change seriously, when it secretly guaranteed a loan for additional construction costs.
In February, the Government promised that no more public money would be poured into the project – after the announcement that Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project's costs had nearly tripled from its initial $7.4 billion price tag to $21.4 billion.
The project is wildly unpopular among taxpayers -- recent polling has shown that a majority of people in Canada don’t want the government spending any more money on the project.
And after news about the loan guarantee broke yesterday, opposition parties from all sides attacked the federal...

BC's Racism in housing

PAOV — “This exclusionary, demeaning, and racially charged rhetoric continues to persist on BC’s land titles today.” In the 1930s, certain developments in West Vancouver created land titles that expressly forbade subsequent residents of Asian and African descent. While those clauses are no longer enforced, they are still seen in land titles and are a reminder of the racism faced by so many in Canada. Two years ago, West Vancouver committed to removing the clauses, but no progress has been made. If you agree immediate action should be taken to remove these clauses from the land titles, sign the petition now.

Call-to-Action: West Vancouver removal of discriminatory restrictive covenants

2,005 have signed Michele Tung 董嘉宝’s petition. Let’s get to 2,500!
I was recently tasked by the City of West Vancouver permitting staff to submit a restrictive covenant for my property, which left me feeling appalled and disgusted. See photo.
This exclusionary, demeaning, and racially charged rhetoric continues to persist on BC’s land titles today even though in 2020, a public announcement was made by Mayor Booth and Council, that the City of West Vancouver staff would begin the process of removing such discriminatory language on these restrictive covenants.
Two years is a long time to rectify these wrongs, and West Vancouver’s Council’s public commitment to actively reject racism and discrimination is vital to build community and safety among all residents of West Vancouver.
If you feel that this is a shameful inaction, please look at your land title and see if you too continue to have these discriminatory covenants on yours. These covenants would have been put on the property from the 1930s to as late as the 1960s.

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Paov,
The Trudeau cabinet just approved a $10 billion loan guarantee to entice investment in the Trans Mountain pipeline.1 Let's be clear, no matter how they try to spin it, this is a $10 billion fossil fuel subsidy.
Once again, the Trudeau government is ignoring climate science and betting on dangerous fossil fuel expansion. Imagine what $10 billion could instead do if we passed the Just Transition Act and invested that money in workers, communities, and everyday people?
It’s 2022. Wasting billions in public money on a fossil fuel pipeline is just as ridiculous as using a fax machine as a primary mode of communication. It’s about time our decision makers got with the times and delivered the ambitious climate action we need now.

A,
We've been so successful using shareholder action to get companies to change their bad behaviour...that they're trying to shut the whole program down!
After a SumOfUs shareholder resolution forced Apple to publish its first-ever human rights policy, the US stock regulator made a new rule -- anyone who wants to bring this kind of resolution will need to hold thousands of shares...and companies are setting VERY early deadlines to buy them!
They're trying to silence everyone but the richest shareholders. But A, we can beat them at their own game.
We already bought shares in Apple, Google, Facebook, and Bayer Monsanto. Now if 5000 people reading this email chip in the cost of a coffee, SumOfUs can buy enough shares in Nestlé to have our say at its AGM, ratcheting up the pressure over their stealing water from communities worldwide…and helping choke the ocean with disposable plastic.
For the next 24 hours, we will use everything you give to generate matching donations...

If the case is overturned, hundreds of thousands of people across the United States will lose access to safe abortion care. A,
In the first three weeks of Putin’s war, over 500 children were recorded crossing into Romania all by themselves.
Alone and vulnerable, they join thousands of unaccompanied kids already in Europe – traumatised by war, now living in squalid camps or on the streets, and easy prey for traffickers.
Grassroots teams have been working round the clock to reunite child refugees with family members in Europe. Now their workload has surged overnight and they urgently need our help.
If we all chip in, we can supercharge these heroic teams – providing more children with legal and emotional support to get them out of danger, across borders and back with their families. They’ve already helped 1,800 children – just think how many more we could help.
Everything raised will go to these dedicated teams:

Joining the Fight to End Immigration Detention in BC Jails

Dear Friend,
Can you imagine being detained with no end in sight? That’s the reality for tens of thousands of people seeking safety or a better life in this country.
On Wednesday, the BCCLA and a coalition of organizations launched 14 days of action to call on the Province of British Columbia to end its agreement with Canada Border Services Agency (CSBA). The agreement allows for the detention of immigrants and refugee claimants in provincial jails.
Take action – find out how you can participate in the 14 days of action here.
Every year, Canada incarcerates hundreds of people on immigration-related grounds in dozens of provincial jails across the country. People in immigration detention are regularly handcuffed, shackled, restricted to small spaces with rigid routines, and placed under constant surveillance. This unjust practice must end.
The 14 days of action lead up to a Vancouver City Council motion to be introduced on May 17 calling on the province to end their agreement with CBSA...
