Trudeau wont get away with this

Paov, can you join us Thursday night? r1

Paov,

It’s been nearly a year since the Heat Dome, which tragically became Canada’s first climate-driven mass casualty event. Extreme heat killed over 600 people last summer1 and since then communities across the country have endured fires, floods, storms and drought.

We can’t let Trudeau continue to prop up the fossil fuel industry as the climate emergency get worse. Join us this Thursday, June 9th where we will announce our plans to End Climate Delay. Can you make this important call Paov?

What: National Organizing Call

When: 5pm PT / 6pm MT / 7pm CT / 8pm ET / 9pm AT / 9:30pm NT

RSVP now.

Despite worsening climate disasters, Trudeau continues to appease the fossil fuel industry and avoid taking bold climate action. Decades of denial and delay created the conditions for the Heat Dome that killed hundreds of people last summer. Scientists have made it clear that if we don’t get the climate crisis under control now, we’re in for extreme heat that will make last summer look mild2.

We cannot let this Parliament waste our last, best chance at avoiding climate catastrophe. That’s why on June 29th, communities across the country will take...

A,

Every morning starting at 3am, tens of thousands of Palestinians start crossing Israeli military checkpoints to get to work. It can take hours. And too often, the endless wait can turn violent as people are crushed by crowds or shot by soldiers.

Meanwhile, Palestinians who Freelance online run into another problem: they can’t get paid. The world’s biggest online payment platform, PayPal, won’t serve Palestinians living in Israeli-occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

It’s clear discrimination – Israelis living in the illegal settlements in the very same locations are allowed to create PayPal accounts.

But there may be progress – we have heard from multiple sources in the last month that PayPal may be taking steps to...

Protecting 2,000 year old tree

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — “It is past time to stop the encroachment on this spectacular place.” The BC government is being urged to create a new provincial park near Duncan Lake in the Kootenays to protect over 300 acres of ancient forest and 100 acres of wetlands. The forest is home to trees that are over 1,000 years old, and at least one tree that is estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Logging and road building is planned nearby, putting the entire area and its resident wildlife at risk. If you think these trees and wetlands should be permanently protected, sign the petition now.

McDonald's defeated

Volunteers and staff of the Après M posing in front of the reconverted McDonald's building

A,

Once upon a time, in one of France’s poorest neighbourhoods, Kamel and his coworkers took on McDonald’s and turned their workplace into something magical.

They spent 20 years fighting the most powerful fast food chain – dreaming of creating a place that could offer good jobs, fair pay and a chance to uplift their community out of unemployment and poverty.

McDonald's hated that. It tried everything to get rid of Kamel – even threatening his life! And when that didn’t work, McDonald’s fired everyone and shut down the restaurant.

But instead of giving up on their dream, Kamel and his coworkers rolled up their sleeves and turned the discarded, hollow space McDonald’s abandoned into a vibrant community food bank — now feeding 2,000 families a week for free. They rehired staff, redecorated, spread the word and restored the heart of their community.

This magical place is called l’Après M (“the After M”...

Gun violence in Canada

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Mass shootings and gun violence are on the rise in Canada, increasing by nearly 40% over the last decade. Attacks like La Loche in 2016, Toronto in 2018, and Nova Scotia in 2020 have torn communities apart, destroying and forever changing hundreds of lives. Now, the Toronto Raptors are taking action to bring more awareness to gun violence in our country by urging Canadian legislators to join the United States in observing the first Friday of June as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Show your support by signing the petition now.

The families deserve answers. The cops arent giving them.

It took 78 minutes for police to stop the shooter. Now, people rightly want answers for why such heavily armed and well-funded law enforcement officers waited so long and did so little.

It took 78 minutes for police to stop the shooter in Uvalde, Texas, last week. For the kids trapped inside and parents waiting outside, it must have felt like 78 hours.

During that time, parents begged police on the scene to go into the school and protect their children. When they didn’t, some parents attempted to enter themselves, but police stopped them. One parent was put in handcuffs. Another person was pinned to the ground while a nearby officer brandished a stun gun.

Now, people rightly want answers for why such heavily armed and well-funded law enforcement officers waited so long and did so little.

We’re digging into why police failed...

Can you help us hit 10,000 signatures? r1

Paov,

I live in a part of rural Ontario that got hit hard by the recent record-breaking windstorm1. We lost power for a few days and we just got our internet back, but thankfully no one in my family was injured or killed, our animals are all safe, and we didn’t have any major property damage. Hundreds of people we know weren’t so lucky. Barns were flattened, roofs ripped off homes, livestock lost, and people killed.

The climate emergency is here and it’s clear that we’re not ready. Meanwhile, our government continues to delay the critical action we need to prepare communities for future climate disasters by propping up the fossil fuel industry.

Paov, thousands of people have signed our petition calling on Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland to cancel the $10 billion Trans Mountain loan guarantee they’re using to save the Trans Mountain pipeline. Can you help us hit 10,000 signatures?

When the repairman was at my place this morning to fix our internet connection he told me he’s worked more overtime in the past two years than at any point in his career because of increased storms and flooding. The climate crisis is...

BCCLA lawyers Megan McDermott and Mara Selanders will break down the ways in which criminalization disproportionally impacts marginalized communities and the moves we and our allies are making locally and nationally to address these oppressive legal structures.

Panellists will speak to:

  • the increased risks of criminalization faced by immigrants and refugees;
  • the continued practice of harmful street checks;
  • the efforts being made to decriminalize drugs;
  • what you can do to take action.

A pro-Trump mercenary billionaire is suing us

We’ve covered Blackwater founder Erik Prince’s activities for years. Now he’s suing us for defamation.

Did you see this email we sent the other day? The response has been incredible, and we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it.

When The Intercept learned in 2020 about efforts to sell military services to a sanctioned Russian defense contractor, we knew it was a story we had to bring to light.

So we reported it out, confirmed our facts, and went to print. Then mercenary billionaire Erik Prince sued us for defamation.

We stand by our reporting, and one court has already thrown out Prince’s lawsuit for going after us on the other side of the country. But now he’s trying again, and our legal bills have piled up — $200,000 and counting.

Our nonprofit newsroom exists for stories like this one, and our...
