Iron & Earth r1

Paov,

In Alberta, declining production from conventional oil and gas fields has left 170,000+ inactive wells and more than 136,000 hectares of disturbed land. The RenuWell Project aims to accelerate the clean-up of these sites, while also utilizing the existing roads, powerlines, and disturbed lands to reduce the costs for renewable energy projects. Due to the collaborative efforts of the RenuWell Project partners and with the support of the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, the RenuWell pilots are breaking ground in Spring 2022!

Iron & Earth and Medicine Hat College are key partners in the RenuWell Project. We’ve been hard at work shaping a customized upskilling program that will prepare fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers for careers in future RenuWell projects, as we look to scale this project model. The program is now finished and we are ready to deliver...

Will you donate $5 a month to support The Intercept?

If you value the unflinching investigative journalism of The Intercept and are one of the lucky ones who can still afford to chip in a few bucks, we really need you now.

Five years ago, The Intercept launched our membership program. Since then, member donations have become a key element of how we fund our operations.

That’s why it’s so critical that we meet our April fundraising campaign goal.

But with prices rising on everything from gas to groceries, a lot of our readers are being forced to find places to save money. Understandably, some folks have no choice but to cut back on donations.

Still, the investigative journalism of The Intercept is as important now as it’s ever been, with a war raging in Ukraine, threats to American democracy, workers fighting for their rights, and midterm elections approaching this fall.

So if...

A message your MP can't ignore

We’re bringing our ambitious vision to our leaders in Ottawa. Will you join? r1

Paov,

With public consultations wrapping up, the federal government is about to make some crucial decisions about Canada’s long-promised Just Transition Act. That gives us an important window to make sure Parliament passes just transition legislation that’s as ambitious as the climate crisis demands.

As you might have seen, last week, we launched a satirical “Ministry of Just Transition” website from 2025 to demonstrate what a truly just transition can look like if we take bold action now. This week, we’re bringing our ambitious vision for a just transition to our political leaders. Take action now using our one-click tool to fax a message from the future to your MP and Trudeau’s Environment Minister Stephen Guilbeault.

We already know the idea of a just transition is popular – a strong majority of people in Canada support bolder, faster action to make sure we get to 100% clean energy as soon as possible while protecting the workers and communities on the frontlines of the energy transition and the climate crisis.1

But we also know the Trudeau government will try to get away with a limited version of the...

Our first Community Conversation is a Success!

Iron & Earth r1

Paov --

Our first Community Conversation is a Success!

Jump starting conversations regarding energy transitions can be tricky, but for the community of Hinton Alberta, which was the first of potentially many, it was a great success! A small group of individuals from many backgrounds came to participate in the initial community event where topics of income security, transition and climate change were tackled. Participants challenged each other with different points of view but were also pleasantly surprised about the accepting atmosphere throughout the event.

Being a local and a facilitator was an uplifting experience being able to initiate an open conversation to my community, so they might be able to have a voice in the changes that could impact our community. It brought me a strong sense of community during the event, as we were all able to relate on our experiences and background with the area. The community members' struggles...

RBC and TD

A,

RBC and TD just held their most important meetings of the year and SumOfUs members like you sent a clear message to Canada’s biggest banks: they must respect Indigenous rights and defund climate chaos NOW!

RBC
At RBC, SumOfUs members went the distance and secured speaking spots at the meeting for Wet’suwet’en chiefs, who continue fighting against the disastrous Coastal GasLink pipeline.

Despite RBC’s best efforts to shut down opposition – RBC went as far as canceling the in-person portion of the meeting 18 hours before the event, when the chiefs had just arrived at the airport – the CEO had his feet held to the fire. The CEO was bombarded with questions about Indigenous rights, pipeline funding and the bank’s massive funding of the fossil fuel industry that goes against the best climate science.

After the meeting, Indigenous leaders and allies marched to RBC’s headquarters making headlines on Globe and Mail and Reuters. Meanwhile, groups around the country organized 34 actions at RBC branches during the AGM, sending a clear message to executives that climate action and Indigenous rights can’t be ignored or green washed away.

Were being sued

We’ve never backed down in the face of intimidation, but we need your support.

In November, The Intercept ran a story examining efforts to sell military services to a sanctioned Russian entity.

A few weeks later, mercenary billionaire Erik Prince sued The Intercept for defamation.

We all know what this lawsuit is about: He wants to intimidate and silence us. But we’ve never backed down in the face of intimidation before, and we’re not about to start with Prince.

Yet this lawsuit has cost us more than $200,000 and counting — at a time when the number of sustaining monthly donors to The Intercept has declined by nearly 20 percent.

The reason our nonprofit newsroom can take on important stories is because we know we have a strong base of members behind us. Their financial support means that we don’t have to shy...

I hate to ask, but will you donate $5 to The Intercept?

The reality is that producing journalism isn’t cheap or easy, especially the kind of in-depth investigative journalism that we do here at The Intercept.

I’m going to be honest: I don’t like asking for money, and I know you probably don’t like being asked.

I know full well that our readers have a lot more things to spend money on than donations, especially in these times. That’s why I cringe a little bit every time I’m asked to write one of these email fundraising appeals.

And yet the reality is that producing journalism isn’t cheap or easy, especially the kind of in-depth investigative journalism that we do here at The Intercept.

We hold corporations and governments accountable, even if sometimes that means filing a Freedom of Information lawsuit. We call out corruption and hypocrisy wherever we see it, regardless of political affiliation. We...

A plastic Nestle water bottle in nature

A,

We've been so successful using shareholder action to get companies to change their bad behaviour...that they're trying to shut the whole program down!

After a SumOfUs shareholder resolution forced Apple to publish its first-ever human rights policy, the US stock regulator made a new rule -- anyone who wants to bring this kind of resolution will need to hold thousands of shares...and companies are setting VERY early deadlines to buy them!

They're trying to silence everyone but the richest shareholders. But A, we can beat them at their own game.

We already bought shares in Apple, Google, Facebook, and Bayer Monsanto. Now if 5000 people reading this email chip in the cost of a coffee, SumOfUs can buy enough shares in Nestlé to have our say at its AGM, ratcheting up the pressure over their stealing water from communities worldwide…and helping choke the ocean with disposable plastic.

For the next 24 hours, we will use everything you give to generate matching donations...

Thank you for supporting youth

This is a test r1

Dear Friend,

This spring, we asked you to donate to support our public education program. Dozens of BCCLA supporters stepped up and made generous gifts. Thank you so much!

With your support, our work will have impacts for years to come. Students today will bring their learnings far into adulthood. They will be future change-makers and advocates of justice.

With your donation, we will be able to:

- Put together our next Youth Conference in March 2023, and welcome more than 100 students to learn about civil liberties and human rights issues;

- Create educational materials, lesson plans and infographics about privacy on mobile devices, so our younger generation knows their rights;

- Continue to connect with teachers and schools so that they can bring civil liberties and human rights knowledge to their classrooms.

Learning about our civil liberties shouldn’t begin at the moment our rights are infringed upon. With your support, we can empower youth to know their rights and fight for...

An important update from Jeremy Scahill, Ryan Grim, and Betsy Reed

Since President Joe Biden was elected, we’ve lost more than 4,000 monthly donors. That’s a 20 percent decline in less than two years.

We’re writing today because The Intercept is facing a major financial shortfall, and we want to be transparent about what’s happening — and how you can help.

Our nonprofit newsroom depends on the generous support of readers like you — but especially on those who make an ongoing monthly donation. Their commitment provides a predictable, steady base of support that allows us to plan confidently for major investigations.

Unfortunately, since President Joe Biden was elected, we’ve lost more than 4,000 monthly donors. That’s a 20 percent decline in less than two years.

Of course, traffic and ratings have dropped across the entire media industry since Donald Trump left office. But The Intercept doesn’t accept website advertising or charge for...

Barn owl experiments

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — A John Hopkins University researcher is studying barn owls for medical research. Petition starter Mannat wants the experiments to stop. Concern has been raised by PETA over inhumane treatment and torture of the owls, which includes implanting electrodes into the owls’ brain while they are fully conscious, as well as implanting bolts in their skulls to hold the owls in a stationary position. If you agree that these experiments should stop, sign the petition today.
