I cant believe how bad this is…

There are some big problems with Canada’s new emissions reduction plan. r1

Paov,

Today, Trudeau unveiled Canada’s new emissions reduction plan — and there’s a big problem.1

Despite a clear need to phase out fossil fuels, this plan assumes that oil and gas production in Canada will expand — with tar sands expansion expected to increase by a million barrels per day by 2030.

On top of that, while all of Canada is expected to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030, the fossil fuel industry is expected to only reach 30% reductions. That’s 10% less than the rest of the country. And, tax payers will be on the hook for financing the industry’s emissions reduction measures.

Plans like this are eating up the precious years we have left to phase out our dependence on fossil fuels and shift to a green energy economy. If the Trudeau government is serious about taking action on the climate emergency, they need to get moving on an ambitious Just Transition Act that works for people and the planet. Help make sure they get this message by making your submission to Natural Resources Canada’s public consultation on Canada’s Just Transition.

Once again, the Trudeau government has put forward a plan...

A,

Is it enough to express ‘profound sorrow’ for an ‘appalling atrocity’ that you benefited from? Prince William may think it is, but for many in countries like Barbados, Jamaica and the Bahamas, it just doesn’t cut it.

As William and Kate tour the Caribbean, they were greeted with calls for justice, and that amends be made for the legacy of slavery. Will you join?

Campaigners in Kingston staged a protest demanding reparations when the Royal tour arrived in Jamaica. The Prime Minister of Barbados -- the world’s newest...

The government wants to hear from you on a Just Transition plan

Use our one click tool to participate in the government Just Transition consultation. r1

Paov,

I'll cut to the chase.

We have a short window of time to intervene in Natural Resources Canada’s Just Transition consultation. This is our chance to ensure that Canada’s Just Transition plan works for people and the planet, creates millions of green jobs, and aligns with the scale and urgency of climate science.

We need as many people as possible to flood this submission portal to ensure our demands and voices are centered in this consultation period. Take one minute to use our easy one click tool to make your submission.

Make a submission

Right now, Big Oil is trying to hijack the consultation process and water down Just Transition legislation to ensure their profits are protected. Just recently, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), Canada's dirtiest oil and gas lobby, launched their own tool to flood the public consultation process with messages in support of oil and gas.1

Empower the Next Generation of Youths

This is a test r1

Dear Friend,

When I tell people I work at the BCCLA, they tend to ask me what kind of work we do. When they learn about our Public Legal Education programs, they always want to know more.

Recently, I’ve been telling everyone about the phenomenal response we receive from our annual Youth Conference. On March 2 and 3, we brought together 140 students from across the Vancouver Lower Mainland, who attended virtually and learned from a territorial welcome, two keynote speakers, and five fantastic workshop presenters.

Over the course of the Conference, students learned about:

  • Their rights in the workplace
  • Local housing justice issues in conversation with a person with lived experience of tent city advocacy, homelessness, and housing precarity
  • Cree law, and the ability for Indigenous laws to work alongside Canada’s legal system
  • Their rights online, both in school and outside of school

Public legal education is a core part of our work because we believe better is possible. We believe societal change...

Bulldozing Borneo's majestic forests

Young gibbon resting with its mother on a tree branch

A,

One of Malaysia’s largest timber and palm oil corporations is deforesting huge swathes of rainforest in Borneo without consent, decimating endangered gibbon, clouded leopard and pangolin habitats.

When a local, four-person NGO helped expose the destruction, the timber giant slapped them with a $1.8 million lawsuit to silence them!

We know it won’t end there. The family that owns this company is worth over $400 million – and they can afford to hire high priced lawyers to legally bully these forest defenders.

But if enough of us chip in, we can give this small but mighty NGO the money they need to fight back in court and win. Their next legal deadline is fast approaching and they need an influx of cash – can you chip in?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately.

TD Pensions

A,

TD is still financing the climate crisis. The bank is one of the top ten biggest funders of fossil fuel projects worldwide. It dumps billions every year into big oil and gas -- including destructive pipelines and tar sands mines.

But did you know that your retirement savings could help make TD change its ways and be part of the solution to slowing climate change?

That’s because if you have a pension, including CPP or CDPQ, it’s almost certainly invested in TD and that means you have the power to force TD to stop financing climate catastrophe.

We submitted a groundbreaking shareholder proposal calling on TD to stop funding any new fossil fuels expansion by the end of 2022. If you are a shareholder, you can make double the difference by voting your shares for proposal 1 through the proxy circular as well as pressuring your pension fund.

Can you ask your fund manager to vote for our proposal?

This proposal would ensure that TD takes the bold action needed to prevent climate catastrophe. In fact, top scientists and policy makers say that no new fossil fuel expansion is the only way to meet the Paris Climate Agreement.

But in order for...
