BREAKING: NDP & Liberals strike a deal to work together to deliver a Just Transition

Take action to ensure Just Transition legislation is strong and works for people first. r1

Paov,

We got some huge news this morning.

The Liberal Party and the NDP have officially struck a deal to govern cooperatively until 2025.1 This deal is subject to the Liberals prioritizing key policies put forward by the NDP and a commitment to pass Just Transition legislation is one of these key policy priorities.

Paov, this is big news, and all thanks to people like you who have taken action over and over again to make sure that a Just Transition Act is top of mind for our political decision makers.

Now that we’re closer than ever to winning a Just Transition Act, let’s make sure that the legislation we end up with meets the scale and urgency of the crises we face. Make a submission now to Natural Resources Canada to demand a Just Transition Act that puts people first, creates millions of green jobs, and aligns with climate science.

Earlier today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh shared that their cooperation with the Liberals is contingent on the Trudeau government finally delivering “Just Transition legislation, guided by the feedback we receive...

Elephant herd in front of Mount Kiliminjaro

A,

A majestic and essential breeding ground for elephants is about to be sold off to international investors and destroyed, but a nearby Maasai community is trying to come to the rescue -- we can help them win!

These indigenous leaders already run a wildly successful conservancy and if they can show they have the resources to acquire the land and remove the fencing that threatens migrating herds, the sellers say they have a deal. But investors are already calling with big offers, so they need to move fast -- that's where we come in!

Just 200 dollars will allow the community to grow the conservancy by a whole acre of essential land! Together we can help create the longest wildlife corridor in East Africa. Are you in?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately.

Defending Human Rights: Change Through Collaboration

This is a test r1

Dear Friend,

At the BCCLA, we have always fought to protect fundamental human rights and freedoms, but we never do this work alone.

From coalition work and joint advocacy, to lending our perspectives in challenges against unjust legislation, to amplifying the voices of people across the country, we continue to uphold human rights and push for change through collaboration.

Read about our work to protect democratic rights.

Some highlights from the past two years:

  • Dismantling legacies of discrimination: As part of the Coalition on Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) in BC, we raised concerns about the lack of information and registration delays for First Nations women and their descendants who are newly entitled to status. Along with the BC Human Rights Tribunal and other organizations, we also advocated for the addition of Indigenous identity as a ground of discrimination in the BC Human Rights Code.
  • Protecting benefits for young adults leaving government care in Alberta: The BCCLA intervened in AC and...

Theyre paying attention -- so lets take the next step

Let's demand immediate action for a Just Transition. r1

Paov,

We’re at a crossroads when it comes to climate action in this country. Big Oil billionaires and their allies are doing everything they can to profit from this moment of crisis, using the war in Ukraine as an excuse to push for new pipelines1 and rehash old talking points about Canada’s “ethical oil”.2

But at the same time, a growing number of people are realizing that the best way to ensure both energy security and a safe future is to end our dependence on fossil fuels once and for all. That’s why we need a Just Transition to a 100% renewable energy economy and we need it now. On Saturday, thousands of us in 50 different communities across the country, brought that positive vision for a green and just future to life as part of the Day of Action for a Just Transition.3

Momentum is on our side but we have to keep up the pressure. Paov, take the next step and sign our petition calling on the Trudeau government to pass the Just Transition Act by the end of 2022.

We know politicians are paying attention. I was kind of...

We’re suing under freedom of information laws to get the truth about the crackdown on Dakota Access pipeline protests led by the Standing Rock Sioux.

You don’t usually get emails from me, but my name is David Bralow, and I’m in charge of The Intercept’s legal team.

I’m writing you to ask for your support in our legal fight to get the truth about the brutal crackdown on protests against the Dakota Access pipeline.

As you may recall, when oil giant Energy Transfer announced plans to build the 1,172-mile-long pipeline across watersheds and drinking water sources, it sparked huge protests led by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

As part of its response, Energy Transfer hired a security firm called TigerSwan that collaborated with police and employed military-style surveillance and counterinsurgency tactics to quash the protests.

Now we’re suing under freedom of information laws to...

Young gibbon resting with its mother on a tree branch

A,

One of Malaysia’s largest timber and palm oil corporations is deforesting huge swathes of rainforest in Borneo without consent, decimating endangered gibbon, clouded leopard and pangolin habitats.

When a local, four-person NGO helped expose the destruction, the timber giant slapped them with a $1.8 million lawsuit to silence them!

We know it won’t end there. The family that owns this company is worth over $400 million – and they can afford to hire high priced lawyers to legally bully these forest defenders.

But if enough of us chip in, we can give this small but mighty NGO the money they need to fight back in court and win. Their next legal deadline is fast approaching and they need an influx of cash – can you chip in?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately.

Our Continued Commitment to Ending the Police Crisis

This is a test r1

Dear Friend --

Today marks International Day Against Police Brutality. This day of action and solidarity against the violence of policing was founded twenty-five years ago, but police forces still have enormous powers and far too little accountability.

Policing doesn’t simply begin and end at the hands of police officers, it includes structures that criminalize Indigenous, Black, racialized, and low-income people and traps them within an expansive criminal legal system.

People are harassed in the streets by police. Activists haven’t gotten accountability for illegal spying by police. Policing institutions continue to target and oppress poor and racialized people.

The BCCLA remains committed to challenging these large systems of power through a diverse range of tactics. We fight on multiple fronts to advocate for real change including:

  • Demanding a complete ban on the racist and illegal practice of street checks carried out by the Vancouver Police Department
  • Supporting the decriminalization of simple drug possession and sex work
  • Calling for an end to the unlawful use of exclusion zones by...
