Communities' Transition Pathways: Hinton, AB

Iron & Earth r1

Paov --

Earlier this year, we hosted a community conversation on the links between climate change, income security and community in Hinton, Alberta. It brought together Hinton residents to discuss how the climate increasingly affects their daily lives and explore solutions to the challenges the community is facing.

Now, Iron & Earth has published a report on the conversation – Communities’ Transition Pathways - Hinton, Alberta – that shares what we learned, highlighting the need to be proactive, to support workers in the transition, and that potential solutions should focus on diversifying local sources of income and must have economic, environmental, and social components.

The conversation and report are part of the Green Resilience Project, a Canada-wide series of conversations exploring the links between community resilience, income security and the shift to a low-carbon economy.

Check out the report here!

PAOV — Frontline workers at provincial health care facilities in British Columbia have been paying reinstated parking costs for a month, after Health Minister Adrian Dix restored fees that were dropped at the beginning of the pandemic. Healthcare workers are still asking the Minister to end parking fees for workers, so that they are not forced to pay hundreds of dollars every year just to park at work. If you agree, sign the petition now.

PAOV — “This shuttle bus is crucial for seeing a change in the ongoing violence, as it would keep vulnerable women off long, deserted, and violent stretch of land.” Petition starter Cassie is calling for a free shuttle bus to run round-trip once a week between Prince George and Prince Rupert to support women who travel along that stretch of Highway 16. For over 50 years, women have been going missing along the notoriously remote highway. If you think a shuttle bus should be put in place, sign the petition now.

Ukrainian immigrants + healthcare

PAOV — Many Ukrainians fleeing the violence in their country are coming to Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel. This agreement categorises them as temporary residents instead of refugees. In some provinces, this means they have no access to provincially-funded healthcare. This petition is demanding Ukrainian immigrants be eligible for provincially-funded healthcare as soon as they arrive in Canada. If you agree, sign the petition now.

Child working in cobalt mine in the DRC

A,

15 year old Joseph* was mining for cobalt in a tunnel barely wider than his body when it collapsed and buried him alive.

Too many children are working in deadly conditions like this, just to produce batteries for our smartphones, laptops, and electric cars.

But we can help put an end to it.

15 families whose children were killed or severely injured in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Joseph’s, are now taking Apple, Tesla, and three other tech giants to court. It’s the first ever case that would hold these companies responsible for letting children die mining cobalt just to keep their profits piling up.

A major brief is due in weeks, and the families’ legal team urgently needs the funds to keep the case moving.

If the families win, it could end child cobalt mining – and send a massive signal to billion dollar companies that they’re responsible for how their products are made. Can you chip in now to...

Our upcoming project with youths

This is a test r1

Dear Friend,

Do you remember what it was like to be in high school?

When I think about my school days, many fond memories come to mind. But I also remember times when I was confused. I grew up in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. I was always conscious of how some people were treated differently than others. But I didn’t know how to find out more about why that was happening. Or what people, including me, could do about it.

That is why I am passionate about the work we do. At the BCCLA, we have been partnering with schools, educators and community members to create resources for our youths.

Would you make a donation of $25 today, so we can continue to create a more just and equitable future for our next generation of advocates?

Insuring climate chaos

A,

Munich Re is the insurance villain you probably never heard of. However, it is now one of the last of its peers insuring and investing in disastrous new oil and gas projects.

They haven't even ruled out support for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) – a project that will soon rip through Uganda and Tanzania and cause unprecedented damage to local livelihoods and the environment.

All across Europe, insurance companies are ruling out the ugliest fossil fuel projects. Just last week, Hannover Re joined companies like AXA, Swiss Re, Zurich, Aviva and SCOR to change their policy and rule out new oil and gas underwriting projects. But Munich Re, who amassed historic profits last year, is refusing to budge, choosing instead to pursue cash ahead of the planet.

Next month, the giant company is holding its annual shareholders' meeting, a crucial event for the direction of the company. It’s time to escalate the pressure on Munich Re and make it follow its peers.

Let's make Munich Re’s shareholders feel the heat by exposing their choice to ignore the climate crisis and continue supporting oil and gas expansion.

A, tell Munich Re to stop supporting new oil and gas...

Let's create the longest wildlife corridor in East Africa!

A herd of elephant walk past Mount Kilimanjaro

A,

A majestic and essential breeding ground for elephants is about to be sold off to international investors and destroyed, but a nearby Maasai community is trying to come to the rescue -- we can help them win!

These indigenous leaders already run a wildly successful conservancy and if they can show they have the resources to acquire the land and remove the fencing that threatens migrating herds, the sellers say they have a deal. But investors are already calling with big offers, so they need to move fast -- that's where we come in!

Just 200 dollars will allow the community to grow the conservancy by a whole acre of essential land! Together we can help create the longest wildlife corridor in East Africa. Are you in?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately.
