CIA-trained death squads massacring children. Big Pharma putting profits over people's lives in a pandemic. Police "kettling" protesters who dare to op-pose their racist brutality. The U.S. government executing prisoners in death chambers largely hidden from public view. A new president with a 50-year record of promoting U.S. militarism and attacks on whistleblowers.
These are just some of the stories The Intercept has brought to readers in the past year. Week after week, people come to The Intercept to find stories they won't find anywhere else.
In 2017, when we first asked readers to help fund journalism that holds power to account, we weren't sure what to expect. The resulting outpouring of...

Paov,
We got some huge news yesterday. TC Energy terminated the Keystone XL pipeline.
That means Alberta premier Jason Kenney has officially blown over a billion dollars of public money by investing it in the project. It’s clear that Canadian politicians are making the wrong choice by continuing to bank on tar sands expansion.
So, let’s make sure they hear from us right away. We’re flooding Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan’s phone lines today. Join us and call on O’Regan to deliver a Just Transition Act that supports workers and communities with the shift away from fossil fuels.
This Keystone news means that 3 out of 5 tar sands export pipelines have been cancelled thanks to the hard work of Indigenous land defenders and the climate movement. At a moment like this, when Big Oil companies are walking away from major projects that have cost them billions, Trudeau needs to read the writing on the wall.
It’s...

Content warning: residential schools.
PAOV — The Catholic Church operated the majority of residential schools in Canada. Among its recommendations, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has called for a papal apology — yet Pope Francis has not offered one. Some say the pope’s recent statement addressing the discovery of 215 children’s remains at the Kamloops Residential school is an “avoidance of responsibility”. This petition is calling on the pope to issue a formal apology to survivors and families impacted by the residential school system. You can help by signing now.

The daily list of top-rated posts on Facebook are consistently dominated by right-wing propagandists like Ben Shapiro and Franklin Graham, and the No. 1 host on cable news is Tucker Carlson.
Meanwhile, 60 percent of Donald Trump voters still believe that the election was stolen, and a majority think that the January 6 attack on the Capitol was a false-flag operation organized to “make Trump look bad.”
Online conspiracy theories and disinformation may be profitable content for Facebook and Fox News, but they’re a real and growing threat to our democracy.
At The Intercept, we believe that the best solution to disinformation today continues to be truthful investigative journalism that pulls back the curtain to hold the powerful accountable.
As a nonprofit newsroom,...

A,
We won !!! Over 115 000 SumOfUs members got together and it paid off: Accorinvest, Accor, Ibis and STN have heard your demands and are finally granting dignified and decent working conditions to the courageous women working at the Ibis des Batignolles hotel.
Among other things, they’re getting a revaluation of their salary ranging from $250 à $600 per month, a slowdown of the hellish work pace that inevitably led to injuries, as well as means ensuring that overtime will be systematically paid. These courageous women also secured the reinstatement of two workers that were fired during the strike, two permanent union representatives positions at the hotel and the payment of wages on the 5th of the month rather than on the 11th.
The courageous women working at the Ibis des Batignolles hotel thank SumOfUs members...

Dollarama warehouse workers have put their lives in danger, especially during the pandemic. Workers and unions are calling Dollarama -- Canada’s Amazon.
Sign the petition before this week’s shareholder meeting to call on Dollarama to protect its warehouse workers!
A,
Dollarama’s warehouses are cramped and dangerous. Over 1,000 workers toil in close quarters as the company opens a new store each week to fuel its growing empire.
Most of these workers are new immigrants and asylum seekers and instead of being directly employed by Dollarama, they are hired as temps through agencies. This gives them virtually no rights or options to fight back against unsafe working conditions.
But we have a chance to help support these workers right now. Tomorrow is Dollarama’s Annual Meeting and a shareholder proposal is going to a vote demanding the company protect these workers. With your help, we can deliver a message of solidarity at tomorrow's meeting so these workers know...

Content warning: residential schools
PAOV — “To show commemoration to someone who did such heinous things and keep a statue of that as a permanent reminder on indigenous land is an abomination.” A monument on Parliament Hill celebrates Sir John A. MacDonald’s accomplishments as Canada’s first prime minister — but his government was also responsible for the implementation of the residential school system. Petition starter Melissa believes that the statue should be removed, in recognition of its place on colonized land and out of respect for the trauma caused by MacDonald’s government. If you agree, sign the petition today.

Bill C-12: good news and bad news

Paov,
I’ve got some good news and bad news on Bill C-12 -- Canada’s climate accountability bill.
The good news is that after months of stalling this critical legislation, the Trudeau government is finally allowing it to move forward. It’s reached the final stage of committee review and will go to the House of Commons for a vote in the coming weeks. Even better, thanks to the climate movement and MPs in the Green Party and NDP, Bill C-12 is looking much stronger than its first iteration.
The bad news? This bill is nowhere close to strong enough.
Bill C-12 tells us a clear story. We can’t win real action on the climate crisis if the Green Party and NDP continue playing second fiddle to the Liberals. The case for a Climate Emergency Alliance between the Greens and NDP has never been stronger. Do you agree? Sign the petition.
Thanks to a big push...

Challenging anti-Asian racism at the Cullen Commission

Dear Friend,
Anti-Asian racism has played a major role in public discourse about money laundering in BC.
There’s a disproportionate focus on money from China in news stories about money laundering. There’s also a strong tendency to conflate foreign money with dirty money.
We’re challenging this harmful and stigmatizing narrative at the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in BC, which you can read more about in my latest blog.
At the hearings, we questioned witnesses and obtained evidence on two points that challenged these racist narratives.
First, contrary to popular belief, foreign investment is a not a major factor driving BC’s skyrocketing housing prices. Second, rather than targeting money laundering and foreign ownership, the government should focus on providing subsidized housing. This is what would actually support people living in poverty and experiencing homelessness.
For many years, the BCCLA has focused its attention on holding governments and people in power to account. It’s painfully clear...
