Bloodbath layoffs. Donations down. Journalism is in trouble.

On March 9, 47 journalists at the award-winning news site HuffPost were suddenly laid off after the site was bought by BuzzFeed. One staffer described it as “a bloodbath” and “worse than the worst-case scenario.”
It’s just the latest gut punch to a journalism industry battered by existential crises on multiple fronts.
Here at The Intercept, we’re not immune to the financial pressures that are affecting the entire news industry. And to keep The Intercept strong over the long haul, we set ambitious goals for growing the number of readers who donate to support our journalism.
But since Donald Trump left office, new donations to The Intercept are down more than 50 percent, and that’s a problem.
Democracy simply cannot survive without strong, well-funded investigative journalism holding the powerful...

The Limits of Co-ops /w Dr. Sharryn Kasmir
In a time where the Left is desperately searching for a viable alternative model to global capitalism, rather than merely critiques of it, co-ops have emerged as an easy reference to a potential future system. As the co-op model has staked a place in the popular leftists imagination, it is necessary to consider it’s short-comings, and the limits it imposes on socialist movements. To discuss these issues we are joined by Dr. Sharryn Kasmir of Hofstra University.

Children as young as 11 are being trafficked into slavery harvesting cocoa for giants like Nestle, Mars, and Hershey.
But a group of former child labourers is fighting back with a lawsuit that could crush this practice for good -- will you chip in CA$87 and help them end the chocolate slave trade?

A,
Tenimba was just 11 when a trafficker lured him from his home in Mali to a cocoa plantation in Ivory Coast. He was promised good pay and care. Instead, he worked every day for two years with no pay, no medical care, and no safety measures.
Today there are over 1.5 million child slaves like Tenimba, losing their childhood to supply cocoa to some of the world’s wealthiest brands, like Nestle, Mars, and Hershey.
But Tenimba and 7...

Hardships and Authoritarianism: Understanding Politics in the Philippines
Ben Reid
On Sunday March 7, nine human rights activists were killed and six others arrested in coordinated police and military actions in the Philippines. This was an escalation of the state repression and targeted assassinations that have become a common occurrence under the regime of President Rodrigo Duterte since his election in 2016 under the rubric of a ‘war on drugs’. Bloody Sunday is another incident in the state violence deployed by Duterte’s regime. But the state violence also marks a new phase in a so-called ‘whole of nation’ approach to combating the insurgency of the Communist Party of the Philippines,...

Reform of Quebec’s Workplace Health-and-Safety Regime
“Social Partnership” or Class Struggle?
David Mandel
Last January, the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ – National Institute of Public Health) published a report on non-traumatic musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). These are pains and other symptoms that affect muscles, tendons, joints and other tissues in the back, neck and other members. Some examples are tendinitis, bursitis, back pains, carpal tunnel syndrome. Their causes are bad posture, excessive loads, repetitive tasks, as well as psychological demands related to work.
Every year over a million Quebecers – one in four, and a majority of women – are afflicted with MSDs, which are associated with...

Biden Continues the US Conflict With China Through the Quad
Vijay Prashad
On March 12, the heads of government of four countries, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, and the United States President Joe Biden, met for a virtual meeting of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, better known as the Quad. Modi’s opening remarks illustrate the emptiness of the public agenda; he called the Quad “a force for global good” with no details beyond a list of areas of collaboration (“vaccines, climate change and emerging technologies”). There was no direct mention of China during the meeting.
In the details relating to the...

We raised the stakes

Paov,
Yesterday, 500 people tuned in to our virtual town hall to join together in asking: what happened to the Just Transition Act the Liberals promised last election?
We invited Trudeau’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jonathan Wilkinson, to address that question at yesterday’s town hall, but he declined to attend. We asked him if he could join us at a future date, or simply provide a written update on the Just Transition Act, but we still haven’t heard back. Our offer still stands.
That's why today, we're amping up the pressure by pushing our MPs to take a position on the Just Transition Act.
Help us build momentum in support of a Just Transition Act within Parliament. Email your MP now.
Even though Wilkinson declined our invitation, Green Party Parliamentary Leader Elizabeth May and NDP Environment and Climate Change Critic Laurel Collins were there to provide some insights on where this legislation might have gone. They both talked about how they have repeatedly raised the just transition question in the House of Commons. Collins explained that, when she pressed Wilkinson’s office for an update,...

We must stand with the Asian community

Dear friend,
At Stand.earth, we unequivocally denounce all anti-Asian hate crimes and manifestations of white supremacy in all its forms.
This week’s tragic shooting in Atlanta, Georgia targeted three different businesses staffed primarily by Asian women, where a white male shooter entered and killed eight people, six being Asian women. Anti-Asian racism has been present for a long time in the U.S. and Canada, but hate crimes have recently skyrocketed alongside inflammatory rhetoric about Asian communities regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
An important discussion to have right now is that this tragedy could have been prevented. This egregious and racist hate crime (and it’s important to recognize this as a racist act, not just some random act of violence) serves as a reminder of how important it is for every one of us to speak up, show up in solidarity with our Asian colleagues, friends, neighbors, and family, and do our part to combat anti-Asian racism. Every. Single. Day.
In that spirit, we’d like to share the following resources for those looking to take action, learn more, and rise...

In a huge victory for progressives and the culmination of years of grassroots organizing, a slate of progressive candidates just swept the elections for the Nevada Democratic Party’s five leadership positions.
In response, the entire staff of the Nevada Democratic Party quit.
And on their way out the door, they moved nearly half a million dollars from the state party’s campaign coffers to a national Senate campaign fund, while giving themselves generous severance payments. Every consultant severed their contract, and we don’t yet know what kind of money changed hands when that happened.
I’ve never seen anything quite like this. Establishment Democrats and their lobbyist and consultant allies want this story to quietly fade away, but we will not let that happen.
This story is developing rapidly,...

The Struggle for Water Justice is a Struggle for Gender and Racial Justice
Susan Spronk
The essay is published in honour of World Water Day, which has been held every year on March 22 since 1993. The goal of this day is to celebrate water and raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. Check out the Alternative World Water Forum (AWWF) – in French, the Forum Alternatif Mondial de l’Eau (FAME) for a calendar of events.
COVID-19 has exposed deep, structural inequalities in the world today along the lines of class, gender and race – between well-resourced and precarious workers, women and men, racialized...
