Earth Day Summit

Sign the petition calling on Trudeau to deliver on climate ahead of Biden’s Earth Day climate summit. r1

Friends,

Trudeau likes to present himself as a climate leader, but Environment Canada confirmed yesterday that our greenhouse gas emissions are still rising. The largest source? Oil and gas extraction.1

And just this morning, news broke that the Trudeau government and Canada’s most powerful oil lobby -- The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers -- convened a secretive working group during the pandemic.2 This partnership allowed the fossil fuel industry to secure unfair advantages, including a 200% increase in public hand-outs to oil companies. We need to shift off fossil fuels as soon as possible, but the Trudeau government is still letting Big Oil set the agenda.

It’s appalling that Canada’s joining the Global Earth Day Climate Summit as this news comes to light. That’s why as this big global moment approaches, we’re calling on Trudeau to deliver climate action that matches the scale of this crisis. Add your name now.

President Biden called this Earth Day Summit to demonstrate that the United States is ready to take climate action seriously after almost half a decade of Trump’s climate denial. We need Trudeau, and all world leaders...

Brazil After the Collapse

Jörg Nowak

Health experts warned about it for weeks. In early March, the Brazilian health system entered a state of collapse under the weight of a nationwide spike in COVID-19 infections. Hospitals were not able to attend to all patients who needed treatment. By the end of March, all over Brazil, more than 6000 people were waiting for an ICU bed, most of them in overcrowded health centres and emergency wards without the necessary equipment and personnel for treatment.

In parallel, the power bases of the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro eroded in rapid fashion after he seemed to have consolidated his power in early February with...

Killing orangutans for shampoo

25 orangutans will die today. Just like yesterday, and tomorrow.

Palm oil deforestation is killing the last orangutans on our planet, and if we don’t act now, there won’t be any left by the end of the decade.

We’ve got a plan to stop this massacre before it's too late, but we need your help to double up now. Will you make a small monthly donation to save the orangutans from palm oil destruction?

This is our chance

Since we launched our bold new election campaign, the response has been huge!

r1

Dear PAOV,

Since we launched our bold new Climate Emergency Alliance campaign, the response has been huge!

Already, we have a clear path to victory in this election. Here's why:

  • We have a powerful climate movement. In the past few days, more than 3,385 climate activists have signed our petition calling on the NDP and the Green Party to form a Climate Emergency Alliance.
  • We have momentum. Hundreds of supporters across Canada participated in our kick-off event. Each event will only get bigger from here on out.
  • We have YOU. Since Wednesday, our climate movement has raised $16,654 from more than 400 individual donations. No Big Money. No corporate contributions. Just ordinary people.

We're in an incredible position right now, but there's still a ton of work to do before the election kicks off. And with the election around the corner any day now, we need to keep our momentum going:

Can we count on you to make...

Migrant Women Are Holding Society Together During This Pandemic

Taroa Zuñiga Silva

The past year has seen several lockdowns as a result of the pandemic, which have had a deep impact on education, employment and the way we work globally. These factors have had an especially stark effect on women.

For more than 168 million children worldwide, schools have been closed for almost a year, forcing them to resort to online learning from home, according to UNICEF. In most households, it is women who have borne the majority of the burden of home schooling during the lockdowns.

Meanwhile, even as working from home has become the “new normal,” the pandemic has...

Socialists on Social Media /w Dr. Tanner Mirrlees

In the digital age, socialists have used the Internet to their advantage, both for messaging and organizing. But what kind of a radical politics can really emerge from the clutches of capital and their dominance of Big Tech? Dr. Tanner Mirrlees of Ontario Tech University is optimistic! Tanner helps us find some hope in the age of posting by historicizing the Internet, leftist media, and media criticism, as well as probing how leftists can navigate ‘entrepreneurial’ content creation.

Stand.earth

Dear ,

An investigation in Northern British Columbia just captured footage of whole trees in wood pellet plant yards, about to be milled and burned for electricity overseas. This is disguised as green energy, but burning wood pellets is dirtier than coal at the smokestack.

Unions, scientists and non-profit organizations are coming together to try and halt the wood pellet industry in its tracks because it’s not only threatening primary forests and the climate, but also local jobs. A mass petition could expose this industry for what it really is: a false climate solution and environmental disaster.

Over 18,000 people have already signed the petition calling on decision makers to stop logging whole trees for wood pellets – will you join them and add your name?

Tackling Hate, Protect Dissent

Independent Jewish Voices

Dear Ministers Lametti and Guilbeault,

As organizations committed to the defence of human rights, civil liberties, and the eradication of discrimination, we know first-hand that online hate presents a growing threat to people in Canada. We have seen web-based platforms and social media applications become breeding grounds and organizing spaces for the most vile oppressive groups, consistently falling short of blocking blatantly racist, antisemitic, or otherwise hateful content.

We appreciate that the government of Canada is taking the problem seriously and tabling new legislation to address online hate. This is an important step that will help bring existing hate speech legislation into the 21st...

Pollution vanished from the public record

Trump’s EPA told the chemical corporations to change their numbers — and they did.

For more than a decade, communities crammed with chemical plants that produce the carcinogen ethylene oxide have watched their neighbors die while regulators do nothing.

But under Donald Trump, the Environmental Protection Agency did worse than nothing. Instead, it invited chemical companies to retroactively change its reporting on toxic releases, making them appear smaller and less harmful.

An investigation from The Intercept found that seven chemical corporations edited their numbers, erasing nearly 270,000 pounds of cancer-causing pollution from the public record — one of the few tools we have to hold chemical corporations accountable.

The Intercept is constantly watchdogging the corporations poisoning our communities, but exhaustive reporting like this isn’t cheap.

But since Donald Trump left office, new donations to The Intercept are down 35 percent. And...

A Complete Turnaround of the Transport Sector is Absolutely Imperative

A Complete Turnaround of the Transport Sector is Absolutely Imperative

International Committee of the Fourth International

In order to fight climate change the whole system of transportation has to be reversed and reconstructed as it is currently responsible for one fifth (in some countries up to one quarter) of the production of greenhouse gases. From 1970 to 2004 the oil-based transportation sector (cars, SUVs, trucks, ships, aircraft) increased its CO2-emissions 222%. Predictions indicate by 2030 it will increase another 80%.

Between 2015-19 at least 90 million vehicles were produced annually. Yet the individual vehicle sits idle 90% of the time, necessitating the construction of parking spaces and garages. These vehicles...
