Fund a social media ad campaign for proportional representation!

Dear FVC Supporter,

A few days ago, we released the results of a three month study of the electoral reform opinion columns in BC's mainstream print media. With just a few days until ballots go out, the results should set off the alarm bells for all of us working for a fairer electoral system in BC.

Overall, 66% of the opinion columns were negative. Even worse, the newspapers reaching the most BC voters by far - the Postmedia papers - ran a whopping 85% negative opinion columns.

First off - thank you!

With giving thanks in mind, we would like to say a huge thank you for your support for our work to protect our public health care system in court - and we also have a number of updates for you.

Without your support, we would not have been able to continue to hold Brian Day and Cambie Surgeries to account, both in the courtroom and in the media. We are working to ensure that not only are Brian Day’s false promises (that two-tier health care will improve wait times) are debunked, but that the public knows what this case is really about: removing the protections that ensure patients can get care based...

Heres how we can win the BC referendum on pr

Dear FVC Supporter,

A recent Angus Reid poll suggests that the upcoming BC referendum could go either way.

There is a strong contingent of popular support for proportional representation (Pro Rep) (34%) but almost as many who oppose it (31%). Remarkably, 34% of voters remain uncertain.

I am writing to you to ask you as a supporter to personally engage to help us win this historical campaign by talking to as many people you know as possible about Pro Rep – your relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers, in particular those people who remain uncertain or who may have been misguided by the scaremongering or misinformation tactics being used by opponents of electoral reform.

There are tens of thousands of us, and people who know us trust our judgement more than they trust those with a vested interest in first-past-the-post. If each of us takes it upon ourselves to talk to 5, 10, 20 or 50 people that we know, we will quickly reach the threshold of Pro Rep support needed to win.

Can you come to Vancouver to canvass Oct 15-29? Want a lawn sign?

Can you come to Vancouver to canvass for proportional representation between October 15-29? And a reminder about lawn signs!

Dear FVC Supporter,

In about 18 days, the ballots are mailed out in BC's referendum on proportional representation.

The most recent polling put the proportional representation side at 52% - but our voters - young people, renters, those whose voices most need to be heard - are less likely to vote.

Face to face contact with voters is the only thing more powerful than advertising. Your conversation with a voter could make the difference.

Consider coming to Vancouver this month to help the Fair Vote Canada team make history.

We have 22 people in Vancouver willing to offer lodging to canvassers.

Dear Friends and Students of SJS,

New course (could count as SJS elective):

ANTH 393 A05 (CRN: 23907)

Music and Society: Anthropologies of Music

Tuesdays: 14:30 – 16:20 on campus & some on-line instructional method

What does it mean to take the time to make music today when it would appear there are so many urgent social and political matters? This class critically engages music history, the lives of performers, the production of live performances, and experiences that involve music makers and organizers, their choices and their communities. Along the way, students will be introduced to foundational theories of ethnomusicology, ecomusicology, and sociomusicology. Performances have always been political and environmental in their manifestation, but the social activities that proceed and allow performance to happen are also transformative. This course traces experiences of popular music today back to fundamental issues of oppression,...

See our new feature film in theatres!

These vital stories will find a global audience and a life could be saved.

Since 2014 four of the artists who were involved in SHD have been working with me on my new feature film When The Storm Fades.

We shot it on Leyte Island in the Philippines, where my Mother was born and raised and where the strongest storm in recorded history made landfall in 2013. It stars real survivors of a climate disaster alongside Canadian Comedy Award Winners Aaron Read and Kayla Lorette. It was Executive Produced by Naomi Klein, The Yes Men and Mark Achbar (director of The Corporation and Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent). Adam Mckay, the Oscar winning writer/director of Anchorman, Step Brothers, The Other Guys and The Big Short has privately screened our film and said: “Wow. That’s a beautiful film. Never seen anything like it.” Last week we had our World Premiere at Mumbai’s Indian Cine Film Festival where we were in competition with 100+ films from 20 countries. The festival jury awarded us the prize for ‘Best Director’.

Now you will have a chance to see it at very limited festival screenings in Vancouver October 4th & 7th @ The Vancouver International Film Festival (Tickets Available Here) and October 11th @ The Famous Players Canada Square Cinema in Toronto (Tickets Available Here). This fall the film will simultaneously be touring international festivals in the UK, Spain, Greece and Brazil.
