Call To Action

Dear Friends of SJS,

Recently, an incident occurred that once again revealed the depth of racism and incitement to violence on campus. President Cassels issued a statement in response. (http://www.uvic.ca/president/activities/index.php).

While we appreciate his intervention, we do not feel his response was appropriate and sufficient to address the seriousness and scale of racial intolerance and violence on campus. We believe that much more needs to be done to confront systemic and recurring hatred, exclusion and violence. Our University needs more effective strategies than we presently have.

We invite you to join us at a Forum open to faculty, staff and students. The Forum is tentatively scheduled for

April 13, 2017, Thursday, from 12:00 pm Noon – 1:30pm

David Turpin Building Room A110.

The Forum is a first step...

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." –Thirteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution
When the 13th amendment was ratified in 1865, its drafters left themselves a large, very exploitable loophole in the guise of an easily missed clause in its definition. That clause, which converts slavery from a legal business model to an equally legal method of punishment for criminals, is the subject of the documentary “13th.”
Director Ava DuVernay’s takes an unflinching, well-informed and thoroughly researched look at the American system of incarceration, specifically how the prison industrial complex affects people of color. Her analysis could not be more timely nor more infuriating. The film builds its case piece by shattering piece, inspiring...

Seniors

NationBuilder r1 Dear Paov --

As I was collecting vote pledges at a community centre this week, I spoke with Claudia, a woman who was forced to quit her job in order to keep up with the needs of her aging parents.

Claudia moved her parents into her home but she’s just not able to get enough public home support for them, and they can’t afford expensive private care. As her mother's dementia worsens, she’s not sure where to turn.

A shocking report released last week reveals this is a tragically common situation for many in B.C.: today, seniors have less access to home and community care services than they did 16 years ago. [1]

When seniors can’t get services like home support or residential care, they are left unsupported, family caregivers like Claudia are overburdened, and hospitals become overcrowded.

That’s why I’m asking you to join me...

You're in the news

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the bad that’s happening in the world. Lately the news has been dominated by Senator Lynn Beyak’s terrible comments about residential schools, reports of violent attacks in Syria, and the latest shocking Trump scandal.

But there’s also a lot of good happening -- we’re winning campaigns -- and it’s because of you that this is all possible.

Here’s a snapshot of some exciting things that we’ve done together in the last few weeks. This is what sets Leadnow apart -- we’re fiercely independent, we can tackle multiple issues at a time, and when we work together, we get results. We spring into action at the flip of the switch - and it’s working.

Help keep this up!

Announcing speaker: Candy Palmater - Candy Palm

Full Image Full Image Candy Palmater to speak at CLC Convention in May Full Image Full Image
The CLC is very excited to announce Candy Palmater as a speaker at this year’s convention. Candy is a feminist comic, actor, writer, international speaker, activist and award-winning TV and radio personality, to name just a few of her many accomplishments. We are thrilled that Candy will be joining us in Toronto in May.

More than 3,000 union activists from across Canada will gather in Toronto from May 8 to 12 for the CLC’s 28th Constitutional Convention. This year’s convention theme is “Together for a Fair Future” and will focus on four key pillars: fairness, equity, green jobs, and organizing to strengthen Canada’s unions.

Stay tuned for more news on the Convention 2017 website, where you’ll also find information for delegates, like helpful tips on registration, childcare, accessibility, travel, and accommodation. The convention agenda will be available on the website by April 14th.

We have a plan! / Voici le plan!

La version française se trouve ci-dessous.

There are times when each of us can make a difference in a very concrete way.

This is one of those times!

We must show Justin Trudeau that there is a price to pay for his government’s betrayal on electoral reform.

Being Multi-Partisan is not easy, especially when some of your friends don’t stand up for you. We know that a lot of Liberal MPs support fairer elections but they’ve gone silent. Maybe they are embarrassed that their boss decided that he would kill electoral reform because it wasn’t going his way, or maybe they don’t want to create waves because that is a guaranteed way to stay on the back bench?

TD wont like this stunt

Kinder Morgan’s under “financial distress”, and desperately looking for investors to back its risky, climate-killing Trans Mountain pipeline.[1-2]

They’re relying on TD bank to help them find investors -- but Leadnow members are turning up the heat on TD to dump Kinder Morgan. Already more than 23,000 have signed a petition to TD, and we’re getting ready to deliver it at their Annual Shareholders Meeting (ASM) in Toronto this Thursday.

TD’s top shareholders, clients, and the media will all be at the shareholder meeting, where TD will be especially vulnerable to public pressure. So instead of just delivering your petition, we want to make a huge spectacle that will put TD into damage control mode. It could be enough to get them to dump Kinder Morgan, but only if enough people chip in to make it happen. With only 3 days to go we have to act fast.

Donate to get TD to #DumpKinderMorgan!

  • If we raise $5000 we can organize a media stunt with visuals designed to attract TV news cameras. Picture barrels of spilling oil, actors playing TD executives, and hard-hitting signs and banners.

  • If we raise $10,000 we can rent a giant jumbotron truck to display messages from Leadnow community. We’ve already confirmed that there’s a truck available, we just need to confirm the budget.

Join the Blackspot movement: Save 15% on a pair of Unswooshers before April 10

“While dangerous, the shoe is also pretty much peace and love on your feet.”

-Vegan Kicks

Hey Jammer,

Alright, you’re tired. The shoes on your feet aren’t comfortable, not for you, not for workers, not for the planet. Nike’s swoosh is one of the most iconic corporate logos in the world. But built on what? Slave labor, environmental destruction, billion dollar celebrity payoffs . . . bit by bit, people are waking up to what this really means and are starting to look for alternatives.

Can I deliver your signature?

In 1 days, I’m going to put on a suit and head to TD’s annual shareholder meeting here in Toronto where I’ll hand deliver a petition calling on TD to stop supporting Kinder Morgan’s dirty tarsands pipeline.

More than 15,000 Leadnow members have already signed, but we need to make this petition huge before Thursday’s petition delivery. Will you add your name now?

Add your name

TD is helping Kinder Morgan line up investors to fund the Trans Mountain pipeline -- a dirty tarsands pipeline that would threaten BC’s coast with oil spills and unleash a dangerous increase in climate pollution. [1]

Right now, TD is especially vulnerable to public pressure. They’re under federal investigation for illegal and unethical sales tactics, and they’d do almost anything to avoid another scandal. [2]
