Social Justice Film Night

Filmmaker Asraf Mashhrawi examines the political, social and economic history of the split, analysing major events such as the Oslo Accords, the Fatah-Hamas conflict, the Israeli blockade of Gaza and the attacks of recent years - with interviews from Israeli experts like Haaretz journalist Amira Hass and lawyer Sari Bashi.

The film includes the story of Mohammed Hajran who comes from Jericho but lives in the Gaza Strip. His case shows how Palestinians continue to suffer from the territorial divide and Israel's increasing control on their personal movement.

Mohammed's family has been split with his brothers in different territories, his wife with the wrong Israeli ID, and his son born in one place but registered in another.

"Gaza and the West Bank are only three hours travel apart", he...

Protest 50 Years of Israeli Military Occupation at the JNF Gala

June 4, 4:30 pm
Four Seasons Hotel (W. Georgia & Howe), Vancouver

This year, the Jewish National Fund JNF gala dinner in Vancouver is shamelessly celebrating “the 50th anniversary of the reunification of…Jerusalem”. That means celebrating 50 years of illegal Israeli annexation and WAR CRIMES. And also celebrating the JNF’s long history of complicity in over 100 years of Zionist settler colonialism and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people!

2017 marks 50 years of Israel’s brutal military occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and 69 years of continuing Nakba and dispossession. 2017 also marks the 100th anniversary of the infamous Balfour Declaration.

After the B.C. election

NationBuilder r1

Dear Paov --

Last week you made incredible things happen.

For years, the BC Health Coalition community has pushed for action to strengthen public health care - to shorten wait times, end MSP fees, improve care for seniors and increase access to primary care. This election, thanks to people like you, those issues were front and centre.

Through the work of tireless volunteers, thousands of people pledged to vote for health care. All three major B.C. political parties were pushed to include health care solutions in their platforms, and last Tuesday, the majority of people in B.C. voted for parties with strong public health care platforms.

We’re not sure what will happen next...

Upcoming events and calls for support

Dear Friends of SJS,

Good afternoon,

On behalf of the Coalition to Preserve Truth, which represents survivors and intergenerational survivors of residential schools, please find a press release detailing our fight to save 38,000 first hand accounts of the residential school system. These documents, the IAP records, represent the largest collection of residential school records. They are presently due to be destroyed.

We have until May 12th, 2017 to raise $50,000 that we need to appear in the Supreme Court of Canada. We hope that you’ll support us in bringing this to the attention of all Canadians, as each and every one of us have a responsibility to remember, honor and protect the truth of the residential school system.

The following video links are worth a few minutes of your time.

NationBuilder r1 Dear Paov --

The provincial election is on Tuesday, May 9th. This election is a crucial one for public health care:
  • 700,000 people in B.C. still can’t find a family doctor.
  • We’re still the only province in the country with a flat health care tax (MSP fees).
  • Many hospitals are overcrowded because public seniors’ care services have taken a big drop.
  • B.C.’s wait times for some surgeries are among the longest in the country.

We pulled together a comparison guide of the 3 major party's positions on these and other health care issues. You can see the full election guide on our website at www.votepublichealthbc.ca/platform_evaluation

Here is the guide at-a-glance:

PLEASE READ - torture ship arriving in Canadian waters

Friends: if anyone has contact in eastern Canada please forward this message, it will be much appreciated.

The Chilean Navy ‘schooner “Esmeralda” will be in Canada at the end of June and July: Halifax, Sept-Iles, Charlottetown, Quebec.

This vessel was used as a floating torture chamber during the US sponsored Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. Aboard this ship – among many others - father Michael Woodward was tortured and his body made “disappeared” to an unknown location.

The Chilean navy has never admitted to their crimes and has refused to disclose what they did with father Woodward’s body.

In 2011 the Esmeralda visited Victoria and Vancouver, where they received the rebuke of elected officials and the general public, among them, those who were tortured in the vessel.
