RELEASE: Change of government in BC opens the door to electoral reform!

For Immediate Release
Sent to media: June 30, 2017

Change of government opens the door to electoral reform!

Since May, citizens in British Columbia have been biting their nails waiting to see who will govern their Province. NDP Leader John Horgan emerged from the Government House to announce that he had been invited to serve as B.C.’s next premier.

“I think this is an extraordinary opportunity for a new legislature to work co-operatively,” he said. Speaking for Fair Vote Canada (FVC) and its twelve thousand supporters in BC, Terry Dance-Bennink, chair of FVC’s BC Steering Committee says she “couldn’t agree more. It’s time for cooperative politics and we believe a promised third referendum on electoral reform is poised to return a favourable outcome for voters.”

BREAKING: BC

We won! After weeks of pulling dirty tricks to try to hold onto power, Christy Clark’s Liberal government has officially been defeated. BC's Lieutenant-Governor just invited the NDP to form government after Christy Clark lost a vote of confidence in the legislature — and thanks to a historic cooperation agreement struck last month, the NDP and Greens will govern the province together. [1]

This victory is big. After 16 long and painful years, the BC Liberals have lost their grasp on power in one of the most suspenseful elections in BC’s history. Now we have an incredible opportunity to make progress on electoral reform, on climate, and getting big money out of politics. You played a huge role - your signatures, your votes, your donations, and your time were all part of making this groundbreaking election outcome a reality.

There’s so much celebrate about this election and the role people power played in getting the outcome we deserve. Will you share this celebratory graphic to spread the excitement and to show support for the new government? Click to share it to your Facebook page!

Website statement:

Boycott Air Canada to support the military embargo on Israel

Did you know that Air Canada is outsourcing maintenance work for its B787 and B767 jets to Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)? And that IAI, a leader in drone production, is wholly owned by the government of Israel? And that Gaza and its civilian population are mercilessly used as a human laboratory for developing and thereby advancing the marketing of such drones?

IAI brags...

HEU news release: Hospital support service workers deliver 96 per cent strike mandate to back demands for fair deal

http://www.heu.org/news-media/news-releases/hospital-support-service-workers-deliver-96-cent-strike-mandate-back

BURNABY – B.C. hospital housekeeping and dietary workers have delivered an overwhelming strike mandate to back their bid to secure fair and respectful collective agreements with their four multinational employers - Compass-Marquise, Sodexo, Aramark and Acciona.

More than 4000 members of the Hospital Employees’ Union work in contracted support services, primarily as cleaners and dietary workers in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, on the Sunshine Coast and southern Vancouver Island.

Ninety-six per cent voted in favour of strike action after two weeks of balloting wrapped up Friday.

She's desperate

Just wanted to make sure you saw this. Last week we launched an emergency action to flood BC’s media with letters to the editor, calling out Christy Clark’s deceitful ploy to hang onto power.

So far 364 people have submitted letters - and we’re already seeing them being published in newspapers across the province! The legislature is expected to vote on whether to defeat Christy Clark’s government this Thursday. Can you submit a letter to the editor before then?

Yes, I'll write a letter

We have a tool to make it quick and easy to submit to multiple papers at once and talking points to get you started. With only three days to go there’s no time to waste.

Bogus promises

In yesterday’s throne speech, Christy Clark’s BC Liberals showed just how desperate they are to regain power. They’ve suddenly reversed their position on a number of policies -- issues they’ve never cared about before, from banning big money, and raising welfare rates to providing affordable childcare. [1]

So, what inspired the change of heart? One of Clark’s own MLAs flat-out admitted that “for sure, it’s about votes”. [2]

Clark is betting that if she can get a flood of positive press coverage of her bogus promises, she can win back the key voters that could carry her to victory in the next election.

[HumanRights] Israeli occupied USA

I spent 40 hours on grueling travel between Palestine and the USA and my
documents (and luggage) were checked 15-20 times along the way. The Israeli
occupied United States is not much different from Israeli occupied
Palestine. I will not bore you with details of going from Bethlehem to
Jordan. I do want to tell you that US security agents were at the exit from
the Amman-Chicago flight waiting for me checking IDs and when the one
checking my ID announced “we got him” loud enough for the other passenger
to hear, four of them escorted me to get my checked-in luggage and then to
a special security area where agents went through everything I had
thoroughly. They looked through my note book/diary and also copied my
speaking schedule. When I got my boarding pass for Chicago to Denver...

CAIA Active Committee wrote emails to Save On Foods Memorial Centre and the Mayor and Council about his hate speech regarding Palestine and flagrant support of Israel. Numerous examples were cited.

We Need Your Help this Summer! Make the Campaign for PR Visible in your Community

Can you do a Fair Vote Canada table at a local festival or event this summer?

Dear PAOV,

This fight for a fair, proportional voting system isn't over. The past year has only made us stronger.

Together, we came so far.

Fair Vote Canada supporters, alongside hundreds of thousands of Canadians, participated in consultations with a clear message to the government - asking the Liberals to fulfil their own election promise to make every vote count. At the end of an intensive six months, the facts showed that an overwhelming majority of experts and citizens supported implementing proportional representation, and good models were presented to the committee.
