Emergency blimp action

I need your help. I’ve been working all week on a stunt to influence NAFTA negotiators in Ottawa - but I just got an email saying it’s fallen through.

Negotiators and trade representatives converging on Ottawa to kick-off the third round of NAFTA negotiations.

This is a critical moment in our campaign. We have a chance to flood the city with messages against toxic corporate rights rules known as investor state dispute settlement provisions (ISDS), and to drive our people-powered agenda to the front and centre of NAFTA talks.

Our friends in the US were going to lend us a giant 'STOP ISDS' blimp to fly over Ottawa so we could carry your message all over the city and get it in front of negotiators —by launching it on Parliament Hill, greeting negotiators at the airport, and flying it over the offices where they’ll be working. Only problem? The blimp’s held up in the States, and it can’t get here in time.

I’ve been scrambling for the last 15 hours, calling vendors and pulling out my hair out trying to find a way to make this blimp happen — and I finally found one. A local business in Ottawa can turn around a 25 foot blimp in just 2 days, but to secure the rental we need to raise enough to pay for it within 24 hours

Photo: Your ad in the Hill Times

Dear PAOV,

Thanks for participating in our issue survey last week. Thanks to 233 donations from the Leadnow community, we turned the results into a full page ad in the Hill Times newspaper. Here’s what MPs saw when they opened the paper this morning:

Last week you weighed in on which issues on the fall Parliamentary agenda were most important to you. Then, hundreds of Leadnow members chipped in to get the issues in front of MPs' faces through an ad in the Hill Times, a newspaper widely read by Parliament Hill insiders.

Your ad calls on the Liberals to do three things this fall:

  1. Do even more to roll back the worst parts of Harper’s secret police bill, C51
  2. Remove toxic ISDS provisions from NAFTA, and
  3. Ensure safe, clean water for all First Nations communities

According to the Hill Times itself, these...

BCSEA is a non-profit society that relies on memberships to advance the low-carbon economy. Will you please join us?

Dear PAOV,

Join us for the next FREE webinar of BCSEA's 2017 Webinar Series, “The Energy Step Code and Climate Leadership”, on September 29th from 12pm - 1pm PT.

This past spring, the Province of British Columbia enacted the BC Energy Step Code, a building performance regulation that charts a course to 2032, when all new construction in the province will be "net-zero-energy ready." By choosing to adopt one or more steps of the standard, local governments can steadily ratchet up requirements for building energy efficiency, helping both participating communities and the province meet energy conservation and greenhouse-gas-reduction goals. In...

Supa's open letter

Dear PAOV,

When MPs return from summer break next week the Conservatives and their new leader Andrew Scheer will be ramping up divisive, fear-mongering attacks on asylum seekers, Omar Khadr and the Liberals’ new tax reform plan.[1]

We’ve seen time after time how the Conservatives will stop at nothing to maximize their political advantage by stoking fears and trying to divide us. But we’re not going to let them win.

Leadnow can play a powerful role in countering the Conservative spin while holding the Liberals accountable for their progressive promises.

We want to cut through the noise send a clear message to the government about what the Leadnow community’s priorities are for the fall - but we need you to weigh in. If 5000 people respond to the survey, we’ll deliver the results to MPs in the form of an open letter in the Hill Times newspaper.

Here is a list what we expect to be on the agenda in Ottawa this fall.[2] Will you tell us which of these issues is most important to you for our open letter?

We need a media that doesnt just assume priv

rabble.ca 15th anniversary. rabble.ca logo "Activists, like the ones I call “water warriors”, can’t win their struggles without a media that brings under-reported facts and critical analysis to the surface. We need a media that doesn’t just assume privatization makes sense for public goods. We need a media that doesn’t turn away from urgent environmental issues. We need a media that doesn’t literally endorse Harper and give Trudeau a pass. Good thing we have rabble.ca, news for the rest of us. Like you I turn to rabble.ca as a key source of crucial news and analysis."

The Conversation Isn't Over -- Pride is Political

PeerNetBC News

The Conversation Isn't Over -- Pride is Political

This statement is written on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. We acknowledge that colonization exists, that without its violent impacts we would not be who we are and where we are today. We also recognize that Indigenous-led alternatives exist and that change is possible. This requires naming hard truths and instigating change personally, interpersonally, institutionally, and systemically.

Knowing when to take up space and knowing when to give up space for others is the kind of community engagement PeerNetBC believes in fostering. We know that Black people, alongside Indigenous peoples, are disproportionately affected by police brutality and are overrepresented in the Canadian and North American prison system. We stand in solidarity with BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), Black Lives Matter-Vancouver (BLM-V), as well as the larger, global movement, their work around inclusion and advocacy, and specifically BLM-V’s call to remove police from marching in Vancouver’s Pride Parade.
