You vs Billionaires

We need your help to decide what we should do next to fight for a fair economy. Will you weigh in on our 3 minute survey?

TAKE THE SURVEY

The growing gap between the rich and the poor is one of the greatest moral issues of our time.

The billionaire class uses every loophole available to dodge taxes and shore up unimaginable wealth -- while the rest of us struggle to pay the bills.

Sometimes, as just one person, it can feel impossible to stand up to billionaire CEOs and their army of lobbyists. But the Leadnow community is showing that when enough of us take action together and team up with allies in strategic moments, we can take on the powerful elite and win concrete victories.

Here are two huge victories from the last month that show just how powerful your Leadnow community has become.

"In 1937, Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens, together with Ernest Hemingway, traveled to Spain to make a film supporting the democratic Republican Government against the nationalist/fascist revolt led by Generalissimo Francisco Franco, the events which would open the way to the Second World War. The Ivens film, titled El Tierra Español, is considered a cinematic masterpiece, the first consciously propaganda documentary, attempting to get America to give food and munitions to the beleaguered partisans fighting for their democratic survival.” Digging the Spanish Earth explores the original masterpiece and the consequences still evident in Spain today.

Tim Stanley Lecture Nov. 20

Download File
Dear Friends of SJS,
Please join us on November 20th for:
"WHAT’S IN A NAME? OVERCOMING EXCLUSIONS IN THE STORIES WE TELL"with Timothy J. Stanley, prize-winning historian of the Chinese and of racism in British Columbia7 PM, Monday NOVEMBER 20, David Strong Building, C118
History is not neutral. The stories we tell about the past have real consequencesfor people in the present. Who we publicly commemorate matters. Shouldwe honour Canada’s first prime minister, John A. McDonald? Or A.W. Neil, theMP from Port Alberni who has a school named in his honour? Or ChristopherColumbus, after whom the province is named? This lecture illustrates ways ofdeveloping antiracist and decolonized histories of inclusion for British Columbiaand Canada. Tim Stanley is the author of Contesting White Supremacy (UBC Press, 2012).

URGENT: Site C

Right now, the BC Government is deciding whether to cancel Site C or allow it to continue - and if we act fast, we can convince them to scrap the dam.

The government can’t afford to alienate progressive voters, and that means your voice is a powerful weapon to stop Site C.

SEND A MESSAGE

A scathing new report just dropped exposing that the Site C dam is way behind schedule and set to blow through its budget – by billions. [1]

The unecessary Site C dam could cost us over $10 billion, while our province's schools and hospitals are crying out for funding and so many of us are already struggling to pay our hydro bills. [2]

And the worst part? If the dam goes forward, billionaire fracking and tar sands corporations will get a massive handout, in the form of below-cost power, subsidized by your hydro bill. [3-4]

Right now, the BC Government is deciding whether to scrap the dam or allow it to continue -- and you can bet the fracking lobby are turning up the pressure, hungry for Site C’s below-cost power.
