Energy Connections 2017 brings together public, industry, tech and policy all under one roof
Energy Connections broke new ground this year, tackling the difficult but inspiring topic of community empowerment. People from across BC, heralding from various different backgrounds and industries, united under one roof for a day of information, inspiration and engaging dialogue.
We'd like to thank all those who attended and the speakers and sponsors who made it happen. The day was filled with incredible communication and interconnection, with stories told of renewable empowerment from across BC. First Nations communities coming off-grid, whole communities leaving legacy fuels like gas and diesel behind, these stories served to inspire and demonstrate...
Will your MP be a Democracy Hero?

We’ve faced a serious setback on our campaign for electoral reform this month - but serious progress is often hard fought. It’s time for a new phase of our work together.
Today we’re launching the Democracy Heroes campaign. The ask is simple: we want MPs to sign a pledge that they will work together to put electoral reform back on the table, so we ensure no one wins 100% of the power with just 39% of the vote ever again.
If enough MPs start signing onto this, it could start a chain reaction. And if enough Liberal MPs sign, Justin Trudeau will either have to put electoral reforms back on the table or face a revolt within his own party.
We’re working on a tight timeline, from now until the end of May. May is significant for two reasons. Firstly, it’s the deadline for when legislation on electoral reform would need to be introduced in order to get proportional representation in time for the 2019 election. We’ve also heard that there could be a vote in the House of Commons on electoral reform in May, which if passed, could create momentum to get electoral reform back on the table. (We don’t have a lot of details on it right now, but we’ll let you know when we do!)

I have some great news. Last week we asked the Leadnow community if you wanted to keep working on voting reform after the Liberals announced they were abandoning the promise -- and a whopping 92% of you said yes!
Now that we know you’re in, we can keep working to pressure the Liberals to change their mind. Our small staff team and volunteers have been working around the clock to brainstorm, plan, and organize a hard-hitting strategy to get electoral reform back on the table.
In the past two weeks, we’ve already done so much together. As soon as we heard the Liberals were abandoning their promise, the Leadnow community snapped into action, channeling our outrage and making it clear to MPs that voters won’t forget this broken promise.

The rise of extreme energy, the end of economic growth, a new way forward.
Narrated by Academy Award winner Emma Thompson, ‘To the Ends of the Earth’ is a groundbreaking documentary about the state of our energy system today, and the people we meet are uniquely positioned to watch this global crossroads unfold.
For example, the mayor of an Inuit village in Canada’s high Arctic who is concerned that seismic testing for oil in the ocean is blowing up the eardrums of the animals that the Inuit hunt to survive. Or the environmental lawyer who goes on a journey to areas...

Angry populism: Understanding the new politics of anxiety and xenophobia
7–9 P.M. | ENGINEERING/COMPUTER SCIENCE BUILDING (ECS) RM 123
Across the world there’s a renewal of ‘angry populism,’ where large numbers of people are feeling abandoned by their political and economic leaders and turning to demagogues and xenophobia. What accounts for this return to the worst of our past? UVic scholars offer historical perspectives on the contemporary surge of support for Trumpism, Brexit and antiimmigration parties in Europe, looking at historical precedent and highlighting the sources of reactionary populism’s contempt for the political establishment
