Babies deserve health coverage

NationBuilder r1 All BC Babies deserve health coverageDear Paov --

Right now some BC babies can’t get public health coverage even though they’re eligible for it. [1]

If a baby is born in Canada, they are legally entitled to public health coverage. But a recent bureaucratic change has made it impossible for some families to register their children for BC's Medical Services Plan (MSP).

Imagine how scary it would be to have a sick baby and no easy way to get care.

Send a message to the B.C. Ministry of Health asking them to make sure all babies born in B.C. have access to public health care coverage.

upcoming events

Dear Friends of SJS,
Two great events, unfortunately on the same night. Take your pick.

Thursday, October 20 Friends of Cuba Social Justice Film Night presents:UTOPIABy John Pilger150 mi.This controversial documentary film by acclaimed filmmaker John Pilger draws on his long association with Indigenous Australians. Utopia is Pilger’s investigation into Australia's colonial past and wealthy present. It sets out to break the stereotypes of the first people of Australia. Pilger travels to Darwin, then to Western Australia and to the outback of New South Wales, where he explores the high rate of Indigenous people imprisoned, the low average life expectancy, and the prevalence of preventable diseases and malnutrition among indigenous communities. Utopia is both a personal journey and a universal story of power and resistance, of how modern societies can be divided between those who conform and the dystopian world of those who do not.

My new film + live comedy shows in October!

SHD Hello PAOV!

I’m writing to let you know about my new film and some opportunities to come to my stand up comedy shows in Vancouver and Toronto.

Last week Trudeau’s Liberals approved the largest greenhouse gas emitting project since the oil sands. Even the Financial Post pointed out the hypocrisy with the headline: “Petronas LNG approval demonstrates lack of commitment to climate change”.1

BDS Green Resolution mtg.

Subject: BDS town hall Oct. 20th @ 7 pm

Dear All,

This is to let you know about an upcoming event - a town hall with Dimitri Lascaris, the former Justice Critic for the Green Party of Canada and author of the Green Party resolution in support of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), which uses non-violent action to pressure Israel to comply with international law.
October 20, 2016
7-9 PM
Hickman Building
Rm. HHB 105
University of Victoria

Mr. Lascaris will speak to the resolution in particular, which was adopted as policy by the party at their Convention last Aug., and to the BDS movement in general, as a legitimate foreign policy tool.

I would be grateful if you could forward this to your networks.

I look forward to seeing you on the 20th.

Hello all,
I am resending the email below from 2 weeks ago. To date the facebook group has only about 350 people. Needless to say we need many more to help this important opportunity for BDS in Canada further. Your assistance to promote this group is much needed. New members will appreciate this dynamic group with much discussion and excellent contributions.

~~~~~~
As a group working for BDS in Canada we were all overjoyed to see the BDS resolution passed in August & equally disgusted and angry at how it is being attacked from the first moment. We also recognized what is at stake and what a setback it would be if it were rescinded or weakened (already extremely mild).
As of Sunday evening a facebook group went up with...
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater: BCSEA pushes for better net metering rules
‘Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,’ BCSEA and Sierra Club BC told the BC utilities commission in a late September argument on FortisBC’s electricity net metering program.
FortisBC wants approval to ban net metering customers from having generating equipment big enough to regularly generate an annual surplus of net energy.
BCSEA and Sierra Club told the regulator that an annual net surplus is not a problem. In fact, they said, it is highly desirable, assuming the price is reasonable and the equipment is below the...
Take the electoral reform committee's online Su
One Week Left to submit your comments to the Special Committee on Electoral Reform!
Friday, Oct 7, 2016 is deadline for answering the Government’s Survey on Electoral reform - (more about this initiative below).
It is also the last day you can submit a written submission and/or requests to appear before the Committee.
All summer long Canadians have been packing townhalls, holding community dialogues (www.fairvote.ca/dialogue) and engaging with the Committee online. The media hasn’t shown up but Citizens have taken the time to tell the ERRE that they don’t think the current system is fair and that they want truly representative democracy.
