I almost spit out my coffee when I read the paper this morning.
The front-page story in the Toronto Star revealed that the Ontario government ignored a report about 50 barrels of salt and highly toxic liquid mercury buried “haphazardly” upstream from the Grassy Narrows First Nation. [1]
Last summer, a former mill worker admitted to participating in the shallow burial of the toxic waste in 1972. Unbelievably, the government told him there was nothing to worry about and didn’t even bother looking for the toxic waste dump until reporters started asking questions this month. [2]

Producer & director Neil Vokey of the film "Goodwin's Way" will be present at our showing. He will introduce the film and later answer any questions that may arise from watching the film.
When highway signs commemorating folk hero Ginger Goodwin disappear, the documentary Goodwin’s Way finds the nearby Cumberland, B.C. at a crossroads with its history.
Goodwin, a rebellious labour activist, was slain by police under mysterious circumstances almost a century ago, yet his name still elicits wounds that date back to the town’s coal mining past.
Residents weave an oral tapestry of fact and myth - some remember Goodwin as a criminal, while many others admire the ideals of equality and self-determination he fought for. Those ideals have long been overshadowed by Cumberland’s dependency on a resource economy, which are chronicled from boom times to bust.
Now, as young families set...

Your hydro bill

You’ve probably heard of the Site C dam: Premier Clark’s $8.8 billion disaster project to build a massive dam in northeastern BC, in order to supply electricity for tar sands extraction and fracking.[1]
If it goes ahead, the project will flood vast areas of farmland, drown wildlife habitat, trample Indigenous rights, and trigger a massive rate increase on your hydro bill -- between 30 - 40% within three years.[2]
With a price tag of $8.8 billion, the Site C dam is the most expensive, most unnecessary public project in B.C. history -- one that you’ll be paying for for years.
But we have an opportunity to shut it down, and we have to speak up now.
First Nations communities launched a legal challenge against Site C in 2014.[3] Despite this, Christy Clark’s bulldozing ahead. She’s trying to push the dam past the point of no return before the courts rule on the legal challenge -- but she needs new permits from the federal government to keep building.[4]
The new Liberal government promised evidence-based decision-making and a renewed relationship with First Nations. A giant petition could prove that thousands of us want PM Trudeau to follow through on his government’s promises and do the right thing: put a moratorium on all construction permits until the Treaty 8 First Nations’ legal challenge is complete.
