100% Renewable Energy by 2050 – coming to your town soon

As if the 2015 federal candidates debates weren’t exciting enough, for 2016 the Victoria Chapter has taken on the municipalities of southern Vancouver Island.

Inspired by the Renewable City Strategy of the City of Vancouver, we are asking the municipalities in our area to adopt a 2050 goal of meeting 100% of their energy use with renewables. And we mean all energy use in the community, not just municipal operations.

Towns and cities are leaders on energy issues. Last December, as nations met at the UN Climate Conference in Paris, 1,000 mayors from around the world stepped up with major...

[Happy Interdependence Week!] Media & Residential Internship Opportunities + Kombucha Recipe + Gratitudes

Weekly offerings, happenings, and know-how of Ashevillage & friends.

Greetings PAOV

At Ashevillage, we find the concept of Interdependence vs. Independence worth noting! "The principle of interdependence is the key to the existence of nature's entire system. The best example we have of this are the cells in the human body. They connect with one another through mutual giving for the benefit of the entire body. Every cell receives what it needs to exist, and applies the rest of its strength toward the general body." ~Professor Gunter Blobel, M.D., Ph.D. We see this in symbiotic relationship throughout the natural world and seek to apply it to human interpersonal interactions for a whole and vibrant life for all.

Within our interdependence we also seek conscious sovereignty for all - the full right and power for self governance. Self Responsibility. Using our so-called independence to help proliferate goodness in the world. We prefer to celebrate this vs. abstract concepts of freedom, imperialism & forms of patriotism that proclaim dominance over others.

Wishing you a happy Interdependence Day!
The Ashevillage Team

Terrible is all around us but we believe in a vision that is as simple as it is huge: equality for all people!

Dear PAOV,

Terrible is all around us.

Yesterday, the village of Al-Araqib was demolished for the 100th time.

Earlier this week, police violence against Palestinians in Jerusalem escalated yet again, with worshippers at Al-Aqsa mosque hit with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Enbridge court challenge: A big win for First Nations and the environment

r1 July 2016 | Donate | Leave a Legacy Facebook icon Twitter icon Dear Paov,

This week is a week for celebration.

As of last Thursday, Enbridge no longer has federal approval for its proposed Northern Gateway pipelines and tankers project.

Ruling on a series of legal challenges launched by First Nations, environmental organizations and Canada's largest private sector union, the Federal Court of Appeal overturned the federal approval of Northern Gateway and sent the issue back to Cabinet for redetermination.

The Court held that Canada "offered only a brief, hurried and inadequate opportunity" for consultation with First Nations before the federal Cabinet approved the project, which...

Patriotism isn't funny, but our Canada Day contest just might be

rabble.ca 15th anniversary. rabble.ca logo big bad Bell Oh, Canada.

July 1 is a time for lefties to endure an entire uninterrupted day of cringe-inducing displays of patriotism. Red and white facepaint everywhere and way too many people will harangue and lecture the world on social media about peacekeeping, multiculturalism and our "dreamy" prime minister.

The patriotic trinkets news outlets offer on Canada Day -- like a Canadian flag cut-out centrefold -- are just awful.

Over at CBC Montreal, they've put together probably the worst example of Canada Day schlock in a generation: The not-so-great Canada Day "Tuques Up" challenge. It is like a patriotic card game version of charades.

Warning: the card game is pretty embarrassing so be warned about looking at the complete collection, which inexplicably includes Liberal MP Marc Garneau who they may have mistaken for Chris Hadfield.

At rabble we usually give pause, and reflect on our problematic Canadian national mythology. But this year, we also want to give you something fun to cure those red and white blues.

The CBC suggests that readers come up with their own cards for tuques up. So we did.

Download and enjoy our version. You won't be sorry! (get it?)

The point is that alternative media plays a serious, but sometimes irreverent, role in society. rabble is a necessary and subversive space for radical ideas that are otherwise invisible. Canada needs more radical ideas, more undermining of the status quo, more pressure on the powerful, and less pressure on the powerless.

Campaign Victory!
by Eric Nordal

We're excited to announce that this week, we finally got the wages that've been owed to our barista friend that was getting paid below minimum wage and fired without cause! The campaign began in January, and we went through a lot to finally get here. We have so much appreciation for the workers and the community that stood with us to make this a big victory. Read more about how it all went down here.

How will the TPP affect you?

Here’s a photo of the plane that flew your message over Ottawa this morning:

Yesterday leaders from the US and Mexico met with our government in Ottawa to talk trade. Over the next few days the media will be paying attention to the Trans-Pacific Partnership - a bad trade deal that will kill jobs, increase the cost of medicine, and let corporations sue us for our common sense policies. Corporate lobbyists will be using this moment to pressure our leaders to ratify the TPP, so it's a key one for us to counter their spin.

That’s why we’re so grateful to the hundreds of people from the Leadnow community who chipped in to pay for a plane to fly over Ottawa this morning pulling a massive banner that says “RejectTPP.ca” - a big, bold link to a hard-hitting new website that covers the dangers and costs of this outdated corporate power grab.

Do you know how the TPP will affect you? This new website will help. Click here to check out the new website to see the top reasons for rejecting the TPP, and then use our simple tool to send a message to our government that you want them to Reject the TPP: RejectTPP.ca

Plants and Healers International Summer Newsletter 2016

Friend on Facebook Follow on Twitter Forward to a Friend Frank Cook's birthday was on June 9th! This always offers a great opportunity to remember him in various ways. He was a prolific maker of various beverages so this year PHI executive director Marc Williams decided to make a liqueur in his honor. This liqueur contains Currants, Raspberries, and Dandelion roots from the garden of an amazing 91 year old lady named Elly who Marc works for periodically. Another addition is Kumquats from Frank and Marc's friend Mycol Stevens and everything was immersed in Apple brandy. It will eventually be sweetened with honey from the legendary Doug Elliott. Frank had a tradition of shaving his beard on his birthday and so Marc decided to honor this tradition by shaving himself on that day as well. Nice that Frank can live on in so many forms of practices that people can continue in their own lives. Another example is the posting of a song by Lydiyah Sea on Frank's birthday that was inspired by him and a picture of his partner Alexis shaving him on his birthday many moons ago that you can see to the left. What do you do to honor Frank and his incredible impact in the world. Let us know!

Holy Smokes, Were winning!

Yesterday, we received a copy of a press release sent out by the elected Chair of the electoral reform committee, Francis Scarpaleggia. He was singing our song!

He said: “I am honoured to be part of this historic process to examine options available for modifying Canada’s electoral system so that the distribution of seats in the House of Commons better reflects each party’s share of the popular vote,”

You can only do that by introducing proportional representation into our electoral system.

You can find the full press release here.
