Dear PAOV,
All our hearts broke, and continue to break, for the Orlando LGTBQ community, for all LGBTQ communities, and, in particular, for the queer and trans Latinx communities that were the targets of the horrifying attack on Saturday night. We grieve for all those lost and their loved ones, for all those injured and traumatized.
We light candles, say prayers, and hold each other close.
But many politicians and media don’t allow us even our devastation and grief. Too many have refused to acknowledge the role that the homophobic, transphobic, and racist political context of this country plays in creating such tragedy.
Instead, many have used this tragedy to demonize Muslim communities, and all those perceived as Muslim, including LGBTQ members of those communities. This Islamophobia is incredibly dangerous and leads to increased violence and harassment of communities already under attack.

JUNE 8, 2016. VICTORIA, BC - Victoria harm reduction advocates call for provincial funds to address public health emergency; BC Overdose Action Exchange held tomorrow in Vancouver.
Two months have passed since the Government of British Columbia declared a public health emergency in response to the unprecedented high rate of fatal and non-fatal overdoses this year. BC has yet to implement the services needed to help prevent the 800 overdose deaths predicted to occur in 2016.
On June 9th, the BC Centre for Disease Control (B.C.C.D.C) will host 80 individuals representing regional and provincial bodies, including the Health Officer of BC, the BC Coroners Service, and local service providers, to discuss the response to this overdose crisis. Yes2SCS (Yes to Supervised Consumption Services) says it is critical that the Province move beyond surveillance and monitoring, and take immediate steps to ensure effective health care services are provided across BC for people who use drugs. Service providers and drug user groups affiliated with Yes2SCS will be attending the meeting and pushing for supervised consumption services.

Victoria Friends of Cuba presents:
Producer & director Neil Vokey of the film "Goodwin's Way" will be present at our showing. He will introduce the film and later answer any questions that may arise from watching the film. When highway signs commemorating folk hero Ginger Goodwin disappear, the documentary Goodwin’s Way finds the nearby Cumberland, B.C. at a crossroads with its history.
Goodwin, a rebellious labour activist, was slain by police under mysterious circumstances almost a century ago, yet his name still elicits wounds that date back to the town’s coal mining past.
Residents weave an oral tapestry of fact and myth - some remember Goodwin as a criminal, while many others admire the ideals of equality and self-determination he fought for. Those ideals have long been overshadowed by Cumberland’s dependency on a resource economy, which are chronicled from boom times to bust.
Now, as young families set their sights on building a sustainable...

Toxic mercury in the water

If we act now, we can end an environmental disaster that’s been poisoning a First Nations community in Ontario for decades.
In the 60s and 70s, a logging company dumped 9000 kg of deadly mercury poison into Ontario's English-Wabigoon River system, sparking a major health crisis in the downstream indigenous community of Grassy Narrows, which relies on fish from the contaminated river. [1]
Today, the river is still contaminated, and community members report ongoing health issues. Just two years ago, a 17-year-old Grassy Narrows boy who suffered from mercury poisoning died in the hospital. [2]

The pressure to act like Harper

Then Trudeau said something really amazing. Trudeau said his government was going to collaborate better with the opposition parties because “he feared [his government was] behaving too much like the previous government under Stephen Harper.”1
They deserve a lot of credit for changing course. And, so do you.
Trudeau’s words are a reminder that once elected, every Prime Minister faces the temptation to do things Harper did - centralize power, pursue partisan self-interest, and cater to powerful economic elites who put intense pressure on any government.
To do the right thing, every Prime Minister - even one elected by millions of people voting for change, even one who has already done a lot of good things - needs a constructive opposition in Parliament, and a movement of people supporting progress and pushing for lasting change.

. TAKE ACTION . . .Dear PAOV,
Locked up without charge or trial. Then released by a judge, only to be indicted by a military prosecutor. And thrown back in jail.
That’s what millions of Palestinians living under Israel’s military occupation face.
And it’s exactly what famed Palestinian astrophysicist Imad Barghouthi is enduring - right now. Last month Dr. Barghouthi was placed under Administrative Detention - which in practice means an indefinite sentence in prison without charges - based on Facebook posts. Our Academic Advisory Council, in coalition with the US Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and the Association of Academics for the Respect of International Law in Palestine, mobilized to support their colleague.
