[Sjsall] EVENT HAPPENING TODAY

The drill is in place under Wedzin Kwa

This Tuesday September 27th, Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs will be making an announcement in Victoria, BC about their response to CGL preparing to drill under the sacred headwaters of Wedzwin Kwa.

Rally at the BC Legislature

On Tuesday September 27 at 3:00pm, Gidimt’en Checkpoint invites you to demonstrate your solidarity and support of Indigenous sovereignty and resistance by standing beside Chief Na'Moks, the Hereditary Chiefs, and Sleydo' at a rally at the BC legislature.

Gidimt’en Checkpoint has raised the alert that the Coastal GasLink fracked gas pipeline is ready to begin drilling under Wedzin Kwa, the river sacred to the Wet’suwet’en since time immemorial.

This is a crucial moment

Unlike other pipeline construction work that can be healed and remediated, once the pipeline is in place under water, it is very difficult to remove. This is the moment to act.

There will be more mobilization and guidance coming soon! Watch social channels for updates and the latest video of the militarized police repression happening on the...

Rally to Eliminate International Student Health Fee

The BC government announced a new levy known as the International Students Health Fee (ISHF) that increased costs for international students to $75 per month/per person. This fee was implemented without consultation with students or residents in BC. The International Student Health Fee is unjust and imposes financial, social, and administrative burden in the British Columbia (BC) healthcare system. Join Migrant Students United and allies at a rally to demand concrete and meaningful action to eliminate the exclusive, unfair, and expensive International Students Health Fee. Read more HERE and RSVP for the rally HERE.

Speak Up for Primary Health Care Solutions

NationBuilder r1

Paov --

Band-aid solutions are being promoted over what patients and primary health care providers actually need.

‘Situation Critical’ - Tomorrow, September 20th, 2022 at 6pm the CBC will be hosting a Virtual Town Hall on the crisis in health care. The discussion will address “access to doctors, what's not working and what needs to change.” Speakers include: Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, BC; Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh, President of Doctors of BC and Dr. Rita McCracken, family physician and UBC assistant professor and primary care researcher.

If informed supporters and community partners call or email in to the Virtual Town Hall we can promote real solutions to the Primary Health Care crisis. CBC email and call-in details here

BC is experiencing a Primary Health Care access crisis, which is continually attributed to a family physician shortage. However, BC currently has more family physicians per capita than at any other time. The actual crisis is that our current Primary Health Care model is unsustainable for health care practitioners to work in. Band-aid solutions like one-time injections of money and increasing investments in...

Dear Paov --

You are invited to participate in an Accountability Assembly, on October 11 at 4:30pm - 6:00pm, where Minister of Health Adrian Dix will join us to discuss seniors care. The BC Health Coalition is bringing together seniors, families, and workers to share their stories that outline key issues in seniors care and have the Minister respond to questions directly related to his mandate.

Register for the Accountability Assembly

In the past twenty years, home support has been devalued and rationed, with access to publicly funded home support consistently declining in BC since 2001. At the same time, for-profit long-term care companies have been pocketing public funds as profits and degrading the standard of care provided in residential care.

While the pandemic showed us that our government can act boldly and decisively to make rapid system improvements, we've also seen how quickly political will can move on to other issues. That’s why it is important...

UPDATES

Outsourcing to private clinics

Private for-profit surgeries and medical imaging are big business in BC and taxpayers are funding them. Over the last six years, the BC government has subsidized for-profit providers through millions of dollars in contracts which, in the long-term, degrades our public health care system through the draining of workforce and capital to the private sector. The BC Health Coalition and Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives have jointly published a report that looks into this concerning trend. Read more HERE.

Fire Relief Effort - Matanza, Cuba

Dear Friends in Solidarty with Cuba,

On Friday, August 5th, a major oil storage facility in Matanzas, Cuba, 65 miles East of Havana, was hit by lightning. Since then, an enormous fire has been raging. This tremendous explosion and hard-to-control fire have left several people missing (including firefighters), many injured with severe burns, and hundreds evacuated from their homes.

This tragedy has also had immediate repercussions for the entire population in that province and the whole island since it affects their electricity supply and health facilities which already suffer under the weight of the U.S. Blockade due to lack of spare parts and scarcity of medicine.

In this dire crisis, Cuba and its government have responded immediately and on-site have led efforts to contain the fire, prevent a major environmental disaster, and keep its population safe. It has also called for international aid and solidarity. The governments of Mexico, Venezuela, and several others have promptly offered material aid and have sent experts and firefighters to confront this...
