B.C. isn’t a poster child for privatized health care
During the Throne Speech on February
6, 2023, B.C. Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin stated, “Some
jurisdictions are pushing for more privatization, allowing the
wealthiest to buy their way to the front of the line. Make no mistake,
that doesn't fix the line. It would only lead to more costs and longer
lines for the rest of us.” Premier Eby has indicated that his government will be looking to use
public models to increase health care system capacity rather than
expanding the use of for-profit clinics. That is good news if Eby’s
government follows through. If

Peru: Constitutional Crisis and Social Explosion Peru’s right-dominated Congress impeached and arrested the country’s leftist indigenous President Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022 after more than a year of systematically blocking his attempts to govern. What started as a constitutional crisis quickly became a social explosion as Peru’s indigenous and popular classes reacted furiously, blocking roads and airports across the country, converging on Lima to demand Congress’ dissolution, the interim President’s resignation, new elections and a constituent assembly. More than a defense of Castillo, this uprising is about his constituency’s ongoing political exclusion and the failures of neoliberalism in Peru.

I hope this email finds you well. The White Helmets and CoHub BC are planning to hold a meeting to coordinate support efforts in response to the recent earthquakes in Syria and Turkey. The purpose of this meeting is to bring together different organizations and individuals who are committed to providing aid and support to those affected by the disaster.
The meeting will be held on Thursday at 6:00 PM in Room 1600 on the ground floor of Harbour Centre. We believe that your organization can play an important role in the coordination of support efforts.
We would like to extend an invitation to you and your organization to attend the meeting and share your thoughts and recommendations on how to best support those affected by the earthquake. Your input and ideas are valuable to us, and we believe that together, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of those devastated by this tragic earthquake.

A Path Forward: Human rights-based guiding principles for BC’s mental health law and services
BC’s current Mental Health Act lags
behind similar acts in other provinces mainly in that it does not
include any principles to guide interpretation and application of the
Act. Many people with lived and living experience of involuntary
treatment, as well as family members and personal supporters,
understand the purpose of the Mental Health Act as a tool of control,
compliance, or punishment. Our friends at Health Justice have released
a report that proposes human-rights based guiding principles for BC's

Friends,As we enter the new year our Victoria Friends of Cuba committee would like to wish all the best to all of you who have been supportive of our efforts and bracing ourselves in support and solidarity with Cuba while working to put an end to the criminal and illegal US blockade. We also wish that this new year will be a better one for Cuba and its citizens, and we are fully prepared to work to achieve it alongside them in the hope that we can count on your continued support.
This new year marks 64 years since Cuba freed itself from US control. The first liberated country in Latin America and the Caribbean.
