October 19, 2022
VICTORIA B.C. - Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the BC Green Party and Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, released the following statement on the disqualification of Anjali Appadurai from the BC NDP leadership contest:
"This is a sad day for democracy," said Furstenau. "Ms. Appadurai's campaign spoke honestly about the overlapping health care, climate, and affordability crisis that British Columbians are facing and this government's failure to make progress on them. It's no surprise that so many people were inspired by her message. To those who joined Anjali's campaign with so much hope: please don't give up on politics. The stakes are too high. It's important that your voice is heard and we are listening."
Olsen added, "The BC NDP's message to climate voters has been clear: you are not welcome in the BC NDP. The fact that they have treated these voters with such hostility and suspicion has shown us all exactly where their priorities lie. This is the same party that voted with the BC Liberals to expand fossil fuel subsidies in 2018 - there was no way they were ever going to let a climate activist lead their party."
"The governing...

Only challenger's removal from race leaves David Eby set to become next party leader and next premier
Anjali Appadurai is set to address her disqualification from the B.C. NDP leadership race at a news conference outside the legislature in Victoria.
CBC will livestream the event here at 2 p.m. PT.
Appadurai's disqualification leaves David Eby the sole candidate and presumptive heir to the premier's chair when John Horgan steps down. Horgan had planned to retire on Dec. 3, but with Eby now set to be sworn in as party leader on Friday, that date could be moved forward.
The party announced the disqualification Wednesday night after a closed-door meeting of executives.
According to a leaked report from the party's chief electoral officer Elizabeth Cull, Appadurai broke campaign rules by improperly co-ordinating with third parties to encourage more people to sign up for party membership by Sept. 4 to vote in the leadership race.
"Because no other remedy can adequately address the failings and breaches of the Appadurai campaign...

Holding the BC Government Accountable for Better Care for Seniors
On the evening of October 11, the BC
Health Coalition and member organizations hosted Minister of Health
Adrian Dix. The strength of the BC Health Coalition and our
allies was well represented in that we had over 150 organizational
guests and 24 coalition member organizations present at the
Assembly representing over 600,000 BC
residents. Those gathered at the Assembly heard stories from
seniors, family members and workers who have been impacted by the
crisis in seniors care and heard Minister's responses to questions
directly related to his mandate in home support and long-term care.
Curious what those responses were? Watch the Assembly HERE.

Dear Friends:Our friends and neighbours in Cuba have experienced some very difficult circumstances over the past few years. Along with COVID's hardships and the tightening of the illegal US blockade, Cuba has recently experienced a major explosion that destroyed the Saratoga Hotel, which was being renovated and was nearly complete, and Hurricane Ian, which left much of the country without electricity for nearly a week and caused a variety of other devastation.
Our Friends of Cuba committee will host a public gathering in support of Cuba this coming Saturday, October 15. We sincerely hope that you, your family, and friends can attend this event with us.

June 23, 2022
VICTORIA, BC, LEKWUNGEN TERRITORY – Victoria City Council has endorsed a resolution from Councillor Ben Isitt, calling on the BC government to restore 3-year terms of municipal office. The resolution will now be considered at the Union of BC Municipalities annual convention in September.
“This resolution is about putting me and other municipal elected officials on a shorter leash,” says Isitt. “Local government is the level of government closest to the people. Shorter terms of office increase accountability between citizens and their elected officials.”
In 2014, members of the British Columbia legislative assembly amended the Local Government Act to transition from 3-year to 4-year terms of office for councillors, mayors, regional district directors and school trustees. Now, Isitt and the City of Victoria are urging a rethinking and a return to 3-year terms.
“Shorter terms of public office increase accessibility for people at different stages of life, for example people pursuing educational opportunities, people who are early in their careers or approaching retirement, or people caring for family members,” Isitt says.
Isitt and Victoria City Council will now take their advocacy province-wide, urging municipal colleagues in...

Victoria mother runs a marathon a day for safe supply
Victoria, October 7 2022 — Jessica Michalofsky’s son, Aubrey, died from exposure to toxic drugs on August 30.
As an expression of grief and a demand for a cessation of toxic drug deaths, Michalofsky is completing a marathon a day (42.2km) around the block that houses the Ministry of Health in Victoria.
Aubrey's Run/Walk for Safe Supply began Monday, Oct. 3rd at 11am at the corner of Pandora and Blanshard. Michalofsky intends to continue her protest every weekday until public health officials take meaningful action to stop preventable deaths due to a toxic drug supply.
Despite unanimous talk about the urgent need for safe supply from the Ministry of Health, the death toll continues to rise. People who use drugs are still buying the drugs they actually want and use – meth, heroin, and fentanyl--from the toxic black market, with fatal consequences.
Dr. Mark Tyndall, founder of My Safe Society, is also calling for action. “I think the only ethical response in this situation is to at least give people an alternative of a safe pharmaceutical drug that they will not...

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: An opportunity for Canadians to learn more about the painful legacy of residential schools.
On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) honours Indigenous, First Nations, and Metis peoples whose lives and communities were shattered by the legacy of colonialism.
The CRRF pays tribute to the thousands of children who were abused in the residential school system and the thousands who never came home. Racism and indifference allowed these atrocities to continue unchecked for decades.
This National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is a reminder that no society should allow discrimination to undermine human rights. The residential school system is a shameful heritage that speaks to systemic injustices...

“We must confront the reality of the horrors that occurred on the sites of residential schools. The testimonies of survivors and the discovery of unmarked graves should make us all long for justice and remain
committed to walking the path of reconciliation,”
Mohammed Hashim, Executive Director of the CRRF.
The CRRF encourages all Canadians to do their part towards learning Canada’s true history, including the generational harm caused...

The drill is in place under Wedzin Kwa
This Tuesday September 27th, Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs will be making an announcement in Victoria, BC about their response to CGL preparing to drill under the sacred headwaters of Wedzwin Kwa.
Rally at the BC Legislature
On Tuesday September 27 at 3:00pm, Gidimt’en Checkpoint invites you to demonstrate your solidarity and support of Indigenous sovereignty and resistance by standing beside Chief Na'Moks, the Hereditary Chiefs, and Sleydo' at a rally at the BC legislature.
Gidimt’en Checkpoint has raised the alert that the Coastal GasLink fracked gas pipeline is ready to begin drilling under Wedzin Kwa, the river sacred to the Wet’suwet’en since time immemorial.
This is a crucial moment
Unlike other pipeline construction work that can be healed and remediated, once the pipeline is in place under water, it is very difficult to remove. This is the moment to act.
There will be more mobilization and guidance coming soon! Watch social channels for updates and the latest video of the militarized police repression happening on the...

Rally to Eliminate International Student Health Fee

The BC government announced a new levy known as the International Students Health Fee (ISHF) that increased costs for international students to $75 per month/per person. This fee was implemented without consultation with students or residents in BC. The International Student Health Fee is unjust and imposes financial, social, and administrative burden in the British Columbia (BC) healthcare system. Join Migrant Students United and allies at a rally to demand concrete and meaningful action to eliminate the exclusive, unfair, and expensive International Students Health Fee. Read more HERE and RSVP for the rally HERE.
