Dear Friends of SJS,
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and sage advice that you have provided to me and to Social Justice Studies over my past 10 years as Director of SJS. This position has been one of the highlights of my academic career. After 31 years at UVic, I am retiring as of June 30, 2022 and will be stepping down as Director of SJS.
I am pleased to say that I am leaving Social Justice Studies in excellent hands. Dr. Nancy Clark, Assistant Professor in Nursing, has enthusiastically agreed to take on the role of Director of SJS as of July 1, 2022. Dr. Clark works in the areas of community-engaged, immigrant & refugee mental health; intersectionality, social justice, equity, ethnography, and arts-based methods. You can reach Dr. Clark before July 1, 2022 at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and after July 1, 2022 at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. While fairly new to Victoria, Dr. Clark is well aware of the importance for all of us (students, faculty, academic and community activists and advocates) to work together to address the issues underlying the many social injustices we confront in the world today....

Dear Paov,
With our Seniors' Care Accountability Campaign Launch coming up in less than one week, I wanted to share a story from a member who works as a Community Health Worker (CHW), offering home care and home support to older adults living at home.
We'll be sharing more stories from seniors, family members, and workers at the Campaign Launch next Wednesday, June 22 from 2:00-3:30pm. If you haven't already, click here to register to this virtual meeting.
Our member has asked that we keep her name, employer, and location anonymous, so I'll call her Krista.
"The biggest part of my job as a shop steward these days is talking people out of quitting, to be honest," Krista says. "That should scare every one of us who loves a senior in this province."
As a shop steward, Krista hears from other CHWs on a regular basis about their struggle to continue in their job. She knows first hand how bad the staffing crisis is getting in home care, as more...

Essentials for BC’s new standardized funding model for long-term care
Did you know that the BC Government is developing a new standardized funding model for long-term care?
According to documents released to the Vancouver Sun through a freedom of information request, the Ministry of Health has been involved in a rigorous review process to address the current lack of consistency in how BC funds nearly 300 publicly-funded care homes.
A new model is essential to move towards consistent quality of care standards and accountability around use of public funds.
We can’t afford to miss this opportunity to bring much needed systemic changes. That’s why our Seniors’ Care Accountability Campaign will set out clear demands for what older adults, caregivers, health care workers, and allies expect to see in provincial standards.
Join us for our Seniors' Care Accountability Campaign Launch on June 22nd.
We’re worried about who is involved – and not involved – in developing the new provincial funding model. The documents released to the Vancouver Sun revealed that the Ministry of Health has contracted Ernst & Young...

Paov,
Earlier this month, we shared our disappointment at the BC Government's announcement that they are funding more for-profit long-term care homes -- after making campaign promises to invest in the public and not-for-profit system.
You responded with a clear question: what can we do about this?
Glad you asked! We've been working on a Seniors' Care Accountability Campaign to send a clear message to the BC Government that people across BC will hold them accountable to the commitments they made to improve long-term care and home care. We're excited to tell you all about it and to invite you to join the campaign.
Can you join our General Meeting on June 22 to give this campaign a powerful start?
