CAMPAIGN

One step closer to a "Safe Long-Term Care Act"

BCHC member organizations and individuals were part of the 18,000 Canadians who helped shape the new draft LTC standards, recently released by Health Standard Organization.

In a recent blog post, we shared our initial reaction to the draft standards. While there is a lot to applaud about these updated standards, we worry about the lack of funding and commitment to legislate new standards will limit implementation.

The new draft standards [also] fail to acknowledge the majority of Canadians who wish to see for-profit long-term care phased out. In BCHC members' submissions to HSO, the theme of for-profit care resounded loud and clear. Neither the new report nor the draft standards make any mention...

[evoz] Remembering Remi De Roo

Message from Terry:

Remembering Remi De Roo

Bishop Remi De Roo, the former Catholic Bishop of Victoria who was known as a social-justice advocate, died Tuesday at the age of 97. Former senator Douglas Roche, a close friend, called De Roo a “courageous advocate for social justice, a champion of women’s rights and an ecumenical pioneer.” “He became a driving figure for change in the church....

Find a Tree Relation

We invite you to take a moment to participate in a land-based activity! Go outside and find a tree. Use all of your senses to interact with the tree and be mindful of how you are feeling. Take a picture of the tree, write a few lines about the experiences, and share it with us on Jamboard by February 10th!

What does this have to do with International Development? This is part of decolonization and learning from the land, which should be the foundations of development work.

Dear Friends,

The Mining Justice Action Committee (MJAC) and KAIROS-Victoria have partnered to hold a public screening of Bright Green Lies on Monday February 21 at 7 pm via Zoom.

We have been advocating for vastly improved mining practices here and abroad that uphold Indigenous and human rights and sustain environmental integrity.

With the climate crisis upon us, mining efforts are set to expand rapidly to supply minerals necessary for a transition away from fossil fuels and towards alternative technologies.

Canadian mining corporations make up the majority of mining companies in the world today and suffer little accountability for their abysmal behaviour. So, it falls to Canadians to make a difference.

We have been asking ourselves whether we can mine our way out of the climate crisis and if so, at what costs to human rights, biodiversity and other elements of the natural world.

These inquiries brought us to the film Bright Green Lies.

The film argues that solar, wind and other “green” technologies are not all what they are made out to be. It may be that population control and reduced consumption are as important to our survival. The...

Saturday, Feb. 5 Boycott Israeli Wines Day of Action

NO TO ISRAELI WINES 2PM Saturday, Feb. 5@BC Government Liquor Store 1960 Foul Bay Rd. Next to Save on Foods

It's time to raise our voices, along with that of many others around the world, against Israeli apartheid, human rights violations, and the demolition of Palestinian homes, with the land of those demolished Palestinian homes being handed over to Jewish Zionist settlers. It is past time for us to speak out against Israel’s torture of thousands of Palestinian political prisoners and the incarceration of hundreds of Palestinian children. It's past time to demand that the Canadian government stop selling Israeli wines manufactured with...
