Dear Friends of SJS,

Ma'amtagila Rematriation Project (Update and Request for Funds)

From: Seb Bonet <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

Hi everyone,

The rematriation of Ma'amtagila continues! A lot has happened since I wrote last April to request funds. After many epic work parties making an old road passable, the Little Big House (which was built at Uvic in 2019) made its way to the ancestral village of Hiladi.

Tsas spent the Winter on the land in her house, and, along with her son Makwala, is hoping to embark on the next phase of their project, which is to build a bunkhouse to make it easier for supporters and other Ma'amtagila to come and spend time there.

I want, as usual, to emphasize how much this project depends on grassroots support. While we also seek out grants to keep things going, individual donations and the many community fundraisers that have been organized in support of Ma'amtagila have been crucial to materially deepening Tsas'...

Join the movement for public health care

NationBuilder r1

Dear Paov,

Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, there has never been more evidence that an equitable, well-funded, public health care system is as crucial as ever. Whether we’re talking about paid sick days for workers, safety and quality care in long-term care facilities, burnout of frontline workers, or access to health care for newcomers to Canada, we have learned over and over that the well-being of all depends on the well-being of the most vulnerable.

2022 presents a rare window of opportunity for key improvements in our health care system. We are seeing fresh commitments on Pharmacare and dental care from the federal government as well as a shared understanding by federal and provincial governments that a recruitment and retention plan for health care workers must be an urgent priority.

Despite this, we are also seeing renewed attacks from forces seeking to privatize health care: a growing foothold of investor-owned companies in virtual health care; the increased influence of the pharmaceutical lobby; and a systematic false...

Indigenous sisters wrongfully convicted for murder

Change.org

Imagine that you are an Indigenous woman who has been wrongly imprisoned for close to 30 years and at your latest parole hearing you are told:

“It appears that as we continue through the hearing, your emotions become more difficult to manage. We’ve made the decision that we are going to adjourn your hearing today for up to two months.”

Imagine being told you are too emotional at your own parole hearing, after nearly 30 years of being imprisoned for a crime you did not commit. This is what Odelia Quewezance was told at her last parole hearing on February 25 of this year.

Odelia and Nerissa Quewezance (pictured) are sisters from Keeseekoose First Nation in Saskatchewan. They are serving life sentences for a crime someone else confessed to, after being convicted by an all-white jury...
