UPDATE

Supreme Court of Canada dismissal is a win for public health in BC and nationally

Access to quality health care is a fundamental right that should not be determined by one's ability to pay. And yet, 14 years ago, the CEO of a BC-based for-profit clinic launched a legal battle that aimed to dismantle key protections in the BC Medicare Protection Act ensuring equitable access to care. On April 6, 2023, that battle came to a close when the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision to dismiss Cambie Surgeries Corporation's application for leave to appeal. The Supreme Court of Canada's dismissal upholds the decisions at the BC Supreme Court and BC Court of Appeal that...

Good afternoon to everyone — except Brian Day

Dear Paov --

I want to share some good news. This morning the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed Cambie Surgeries Corporation’s leave for appeal. This means that more than a decades-long legal attack by Cambie Surgeries and its CEO, Brian Day, on our public health care system has come to an end. You can read our Press Release here and view the Supreme Court decision here.

The Supreme Court’s dismissal upholds the BC Supreme Court and BC Court of Appeal judgements protecting public health care. The BC Supreme Court found that the evidence before the court showed that a duplicative private health care system would increase wait times in the public system and cause harm to all who depend on it. The BC Court of Appeal also agreed with the BC Supreme Court’s finding that a private duplicative health care system would result in longer wait times for the vast majority of us who rely on the public health care system.

This legal attack on our publicly-funded health care system has finally come to an end. That being said, the work to strengthen and...

[Sjsall] BCs Office of the Human Rights Commis

Dear all:

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, B.C. has witnessed a dramatic spike in hate incidents, leaving indelible marks across our communities. While we cannot be surprised by the rise of hate in this pandemic or in future states of crisis, hate is not inevitable. So, what can we do about it?

Following an 18-month investigation, the Inquiry into hate in the pandemic by BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner has produced a mountain of evidence showing that hate incidents, particularly gender-based violence and online hate, have surged. We must confront what we have experienced during the pandemic and take action now to prevent it from happening again.

To learn more about Inquiry’s findings and the 12 recommendations for change, we encourage you to read the report here: bchumanrights.ca/Inquiry-Into-Hate

All of us, as individuals who make up our communities and our province, have an obligation to understand and confront hate in our communities. We are not powerless in the face of hate. We have an obligation to educate ourselves, including by reviewing this report with a focus on the experiences of those who have been subjected to hate.

Thank...
