Highway of Tears

Yesterday, Transportation Minister Claire Trevena announced that the BC government has no plans to replace the Greyhound service along the Highway of Tears -- despite the fact that without it, the lives of Indigenous women and girls will be put at risk. [1]
Highway 16 is known as the Highway of Tears because of the high number of primarily Indigenous women and girls who have gone missing or been murdered while hitchhiking. [2] When Greyhound announced plans to cancel their bus service on the route, Minister Trevena said that the BC Government would make sure that communities along the highway have access to safe, reliable and affordable transportation. [3]
We need to let Minister Trevena know that not having a plan is not an option. A massive petition signed by thousands of people in BC could be enough to force the Minister to act, and put safe and affordable transportation in place before the Greyhound service ends in May.
So, Supa, will you add your name now?

Paov --
Join the BC Health Coalition teach-in, an informal
educational talk, with Colleen Fuller to learn more about recent
developments affecting BC's public health care
system.
RSVP by clicking here.
What happened?
- The BC government recently announced it will bring into force the Medicare Protection Amendment Act (Bill 92) in order to protect patients from unlawful private fees.
- Prior to that, the government also announced a comprehensive strategy and ongoing funding to reduce wait times in surgeries and diagnostic imaging.
- And just this week, the court case launched by Brian Day, the for-profit clinic CEO, resumed--if he wins, it could undermine the foundations of Canadian public health care.
To make sense of all these recent events, the BC Health Coalition is holding a teach-in to help...

Cambie Case Resumes Monday

Paov --
This Monday, April 9th, the court case launched by for-profit clinic CEO Brian Day resumes.
In
Canada, everyone is covered by public insurance and we can get basic
treatment and care, no matter how much money we have. Under our
current laws, private insurance companies don't get to decide who gets
care and who doesn't.
Brian Day wants to change that.
He is trying to use the courts to change Canada's health care system so that:
-
Doctors can charge patients unlimited amounts for all procedures and services - from routine check-ups to hip surgeries.

Dear Paov --
It’s a clear turn away from the “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach to unlawful private billing practices at private clinics in BC.
Yesterday, Health Minister Adrian Dix announced that the BC government will bring into full force the Medicare Protection Amendment Act—a law that was passed 15 years ago—in order to strengthen the province’s powers to stop unlawful private fees and to protect patients. [1]
This is very good news.
The province’s plan to clean up unlawful private billing, combined with the Surgical and Diagnostic Imaging Strategy to drive down wait times in the public system, will mean patients will get faster access to care without facing steep private fees. [2] [3]
